had surgery 3 days ago and I'm miserable

I had surgery on Wednesday and have been vomiting since Thursday. The nausea medication is doing nothing and since I'm throwing up with even a sip of water, my pain medication isn't staying down either. Dehydration can't be far behind. I could really use some suggestions. If you were in the same boat, when did you start doing better? When is this something I should call my doctor about? I had the surgery 6 hours from home so that too is a problem. Thanks for any help.

I am so sorry to hear you are not doing well. My son had quite a problem with nausea he is on both Zofran and Phenergan. The Zofran melts in your mouth so there is less chance of throw it up. I hope you are feeling better soon. My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday.

Not being able to keep down water can be a huge problem, I know of many that have had nausea after surgery, but please call your doctor. I myself didn't have any nausea, I was fortunate in that regard. When I got home I would throw up, but only if I ate too quickly, or too much by accident, but it was not a constant thing, and it was more like the excess food worked its way back up my throat, not like full on vomiting. Just call your surgeon, better safe than sorry. I hope you feel better soon!

I agree with everyone else place a call to the doctor and ask for phenegran gel and ODT Zofran. You may try just one teaspoon of warm water every five minutes to help with hydration. This will be absorbed by the mucus membranes before getting to the stomach. Just my suggestions though.

I had a lot of trouble with nausea the first 3 days especially. I had a scopolamine patch I put on before I had to travel to San Diego airport & fly back. Otherwise it would have been a horrible flight - not just for me but the people around me!

I don't know if this will help you, but I discovered the only thing that sat well in my stomach was very cold peach nectar or guava nectar. It was cold, soothing & just made me feel a thousand times better once I got something in my system I could keep down. I don't know if the cold was like an ice pack that soothed my stomach - but if someone can run to the store for you maybe it is worth a try. In any case like everyone says call your doctor!

If you still can't keep water down then at least go to your local doctor or ER and get some IV hydration. They can also give some IV anti-emetics to help with nausea. It takes some people longer than others to adjust, but eventually your body will get used to the new anatomy. Good luck.

You need to call your doctor. At the very least, he can call in some phenergan suppositories for the nausea. Not fun, I know. But it beats going to the ER from dehydration.

Sweetie you should definitely call your Dr. You will be in the ER with an IV before you know it. I didn't have nausea after my surgery but maybe try taking very very tiny sips of water. A friend of mine had that problem. She had to cut her sips in half. I hope you feel better soon.

Sugar free peppermints and warm thing like tea helped me when the nausea was the worst. Also ginger is good for nausea. I had bad nausea. I agree about the suppositories.

Thanks to all of you! I spent the weekend at the hospital and I'm so grateful that I'm feeling so much better. I got fluids, two types of nausea medication and pain meds. You all were so right. I'm going to take all of the rest of your recommendations too. You've been great and so helpful!

Nausea is the #1 problem they have with this surgery and they don't really know why either. I had it for the first week but not to the point of throwing up and I have read that some people have it really bad for longer than a week. Hope you feel better!!
