My name is Kathy, I live in Sparks NV. I had my gastric sleeve done on March 16th,2020. Procedure went well. I am not motivated to exercise. Other than that things are good.
Well done Kathy. Great decision to get sleeved. Follow the program to the letter. The first 4-8 weeks do cause fatigue but it gets better. Follow the dietary suggestions and load up on the fluids. Walking is so important. Give it a shot. Keep us aware of your progress. Lots of good folks here and many success stories. As I tell people you should attack this problem from all areas. Proper diet, fluids, vitamins, and walking. I was fortunate that I lost a lot of weight quickly. We all like instant gratification. Keep at it, your worth it.
Kathy, just take your time. You'll get there with the exercise. The changes from surgery, anesthesia and weight loss need to reach equilibrium before you do everything!
Welcome!
Hi Kathy! I think it takes a while to get motivated to exercise. Is there some activity that you enjoy doing? For me, I loathe running but have found that biking is great. It's less stress on my knees and after I found out that you're supposed to invest in padded bike shorts, the ride isn't uncomfortable either. My mom gets her cardio in by blaring the stereo and dancing around the house. My brother does yard work. I found that having an activity tracker helps because even though I wasn't going to the gym or dedicating a set amount of time to exercising, it still showed that I wasn't sitting on my butt all day. With FitBit, you can even challenge friends to step competitions. Best of luck!
Hi Kathy
I'm glad to hear that things are going well for you.
I've never been a big one for exercise either but as soon as I was able after surgery I started walking. Just around the neighbourhood initially. Once the weight started to come off I increased the distances and upped the speed a little and now I really enjoy my daily walks. During the week (and while we are in lockdown) they are still around the neighbourhood - I have several different routes that I take - but at the weekends we go for longer walks. I have discovered some lovely ones fairly near that I never knew existed. I also participate in 2 yoga classes a week.
I think the key to this whole business is to find something that you enjoy doing. Try different things. You might be surprised what you like.
I have to say though that surgery alone will not be a miracle cure. You will need to put some work in to get where you want to be and to maintain your goal weight.
All the best.
Getting outside for a little walk in the beautiful spring weather is really good for your mood. Give it a try!
Agree with all here. I had a hell of a time healing in the beginning, but watching the weight fall off was all the motivation I needed to go out and walk up and down my street a little at a time. Made a game of it after a while trying to beat how far I went each day. Before you know it you will be a pro!!
Stay positive and focused and you WILL succeed!!
Good luck
Tony
Hi! Congrats on entering the sleeved side!
I've never been big on exercising, and If I had to drive somewhere i probably wouldn't go, but I only have to go into the basement where my tag sale elliptical is. I use my tablet and my earbuds and put on a show or music and a timer and I make myself do it. At first I was lucky if i lasted 3 minutes before my legs turned to jelly, but every time I would push on for another minute or two and eventually I was going 45 min with a few 30 second breaks. As you start loosing weight you will find that you have more energy. Use it. If you don't like going to a gym, don't go. Do you like to dance? Garden? YouTube has workouts. Once you start you might find that you enjoy it, give it a try and if you like it great, if you don't try something else. Go for walks. Start slow and challenge yourself. Wait until your all healed up and feeling good and then give something easy a try.
