Default New and with so many doubts can anyone give me good advice ☺

30 days ago i had my surgery. First week i lost 20 pounds. On sunday i weight my self and i had lost another 10 but today in the morning before my doctors appointment i wight myself and gained 3 pounds. I don't understand since my diet consists of soups, skim milk , natural fruit juice, and some baby food. I felt super weak going back to work so the doc told me to eat like one sugar mint in the morning and one in the afternoon that's all. I wonder if its normal. Yesterday after 1 month i had my first scramble egg with no oil and for lunch a mashed potato. Can you please tell me your experience it would mean a lot and also after 30 days what can you eat

    Thanksss

You should check with the bariatric surgeon's office because if I'm correct, after a month you should be eating more than baby food. That could be why you're so tired, and not losing as quickly although that's normal. Please check with the center where you had your surgery. Good luck!

I don't think a "sugar mint" is a very healthy or substantial breakfast. Have you tried Greek yogurt, lots of protein and filling.

I am six weeks out, and I felt that way for the first three to four weeks. I felt MUCH better once I began eating more real food. I hit a plateau for the last couple weeks (although my loss is not as fast because I had revision, and have less to lose at this point). I saw my surgeon for follow up yesterday, and he said that I need to get more protein in and that will jump start the loss again.

Agree, by what I was told, you should be advancing your diet. I was told to aim for 85g of protein and 1000-1200 calories per day. Couldn't hit the calorie goal immediately, but did within the first 40 days, (with effort). What does your doc's office say?

Don't worry about hurting my feelings because I guarantee you not one bit of my self esteem is tied up in your acceptance.

At a month post op you really need a protein shake once a day, maybe 1 medium or large egg at another meal. You can eat half of a yogurt cup - my favorite is the yoplait Greek yogurt. Tuna is great. Have a small lettuce wrap with meat and cheese. Hmmm. Drink a lot of water, but be sure not to drink and eat together. I went to my favorite Chinese restaurant and got egg drop soup, because it's high in protein and makes several meals. Check out this website for other great tips:

The lady in the site had bariatric surgery several years ago and has great delicious ideas! At one month post op, the very first thing I made from her site is called Shelly's Ricotta Bake and it is SO darn good. It's like eating lasagna without the pasta. When I want to make it now, I add in ground beef and turkey pepperoni for even more protein. Yum!
Once you start consuming more protein, you'll suddenly have much more energy. Protein is your best friend now
Good luck to you and congratulations on your progress!

I would never consider this a faze, you really should talk to a nutritionist. At a month out most are moving on to soft food and out of the puree stage. You should be aiming for around 1000 cal and 75 grams of protein and keeping track of your carbs. If you do not fuel your body then it will work against you. A bariatric nutritionist can help you with what to have and how to fuel your body right so you will lose without being worn down.

    Good luck

Mashed potatoes? You need to eat protein first. Mashed potatoes should not even be considered an option at this point, there's all carbs, and probably made with butter and cream.

My bariatric program moves us pretty slowly - I'm still on full liquids three weeks out, BUT that includes 70 grams of protein from drinks every day. I'm eating 1/4 cup of semisolid food as a meal three times a day as well.
Weeks 4-5 is pureed/mashed, still small quanities, and STILL protein drinks.
In fact I don't get off of protein supplements until about 8 weeks in, and then only if I am reaching my protein goal with food.

You didn't really gain three pounds. Our bodies hold onto and release liquid and that causes normal fluctuations.

Best bet is to talk to your doctor about how much of each macronutrient you need to be getting. Good luck.

Sounds like you're weak because you're hungry! Didn't you get a "food schedule" to follow? I had a list of foods I could add each week after surgery, until 6 weeks when I was cleared for all foods. I would stick to protein sources as your first food choice, meats, fish, eggs, low-fat cheese, nuts, and greek yogurt. (Or protein shakes or bars if you want.) Soups probably don't have enough protein, you need to be sure you're getting enough. After that, veggies. I never drink fruit juice and not much milk at all.

    Sugar mints? SUGAR MINTS!?

    Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

I have a feeling you either didn't receive handouts from your doctor about what you should eat or you haven't read those handouts carefully or you read it and you've forgotten everything and need to study it very carefully.

    The Basics:

Eat at least 60 grams of protein a day. If you don't know how many grams of protein are in foods, use the database at www.myfitnesspal.com to educate yourself. Typical proteins are eggs, cheeses, beans, Greek yogurt, skim milk, cottage cheese, chicken, turkey, beef, chili, fish (salmon, tuna, others). Everybody I know uses protein drinks throughout all their weight loss phases to keep their protein grams high.

As you can tolerate more food, add some healthy, colored veggies -- green, red, yellow (broccoli, squash, green beans, sliced tomatoes, and dozens of other veggies).

As you can tolerate more food, add a few low-starch fruits -- strawberries, blueberries, other berries, tangerines, mangoes, and dozens of other low-starch fruits. Don't drink any fruit juices -- they're full of sugar without the benefit of the fiber and other nutrients in full fruits.

As you can tolerate more food, add some whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat breads, quinoa, and lots of other whole grains. If you don't know what these are, Google is your friend.

There's no specific "diet" or specific foods that everyone has to eat. You just have to eat protein, eat the protein first, and gradually add healthy proteins, non-starchy fruits, and whole grains.

Drink at least 64 ounces of water every day.

Avoid "slider foods" -- highly processed, low-fiber and/or sugary foods like crackers, chips, cookies, ice cream, white potatoes, white breads, desserts.

Take all your prescribed vitamins, minerals and meds (many people use stronger antacids during the first months post-op to manage acid reflux problems).

Start exercising as soon as you can -- most people start walking, gradually extending their distance and speed. Then add strength-training (weight lifting) and stretching/flexibility exercises (e.g., yoga).
