    Default Just started

My sleeve is scheduled for October 13 and my doc had me start a 600 cal "liquid" diet. I can't do it! I did ok yesterday, my first day but today I woke up with a headache and I want to eat. I broke down a few minutes ago and ate a ham and cheese sandwich. I have never been able to stick to a low cal diet. How does the dr expect me to do this for the next 8 days?!!!? Help!

    10/3/15 Pre-op diet started - 235 lbs

There is no getting around it the pre-op diet sucks. I have a very hard time on it, and like you I cheated at first. However, I will say that after about 3 or 4 days in it became easier. You have to think that your body, if you are like me, is used to eating pretty much crap foods. Essentially, you are detoxing your body from those things, and just like detoxing from any other chemical thing, you body is going to fight back with hella cravings for those things. The question is, how bad do you want this? I know that many of us struggle to break the cycle at first, but I can tell you form personal experience that those guideline are in place for a reason, it is to insure your success. It takes a while to become compliant, but the sooner you can master these things, I swear you will be so much better of on this journey. I struggled with this concept for a long time, and at time I was my own worst enemy when it came to weight loss post op. I will be 3 years out tomorrow, and the one thing that I would change about my journey is that I wish I would have followed the rules sooner. I still lost the weight, but I feel like I went through a lot of unnecessary strife along the way that could have easily been avoided. Best of luck to you. You are not alone, but we are rooting for you!

If you can get through three days of it, you will have a much easier time the rest of the diet.

Honestly - that's the experience many people have.

    Hang in there.

As someone already said, the first few days are the hardest. If you can't stick to 600 calories, have extra protein shakes. Do not eat any food that isn't part of your preop diet. The Dr will know if you don't follow the diet. Your weight won't go down and your liver won't shrink enough. It was tough for me too but I was afraid he wouldn't do the surgery as scheduled if I did not comply. It gave me the willpower to get thru my two week preop diet. Plus, I lost 24 lbs on the preop.

Hang in there. It's tough the first few days as others have said. My doc hammered on about shrinking my liver so it wouldn't be too heavy to lift during the procedure, so that gave me the will to stick to the pre-op diet. You can do it!

It's really hard. The main point is to shrink your liver and that is acheived by the low low carb which can make you feel awful at first. someone gave me a tip - have a cup of broth when that headache hits. A bit of sodium and flavor might help you get through the withdrawls so to speak.

My 2 week diet was not liquid - it was uber low carb (under 20 TOTAL carbs a day) and I about died on just that... but it was worth it. Hang in there!
