Default 2 Weeks Out Seem to Be able to Eat a lot

    Hello all,

I've not frequented a board like this, so here goes.

I had my gastric sleeve on the 14th May 2015 (13 days ago) and everything seems to be going well, however I am a little concerned with how much I can eat. I just finished my lunch which consisted of a 400g can of Cream of Chicken. I finished the soup fine, and have no problems, however I am little concerned that I am able to eat so much so soon after surgery. Is this a normal amount of food to be able to eat?

I am not sure if I am "dumping" as I do get a little sweaty after the meal, but I would just put it down to the hot food as I don't have any other symptoms of dumping.

    Thanks for the help!

PS. I am able to eat meals quite fast too. Just reading and it says it can take 20 mins to eat 2 tablespoons. I rarely take more than 5 minutes to eat a meal!

    Uh ... two things.

First, you're still essentially eating only liquids. Therefore, your stomach won't give you any restriction or feelings of fullness until you start eating actual food. Just try eating 400 grams of chicken right now. No, wait, don't!

Second, yeah, you're eating MUCH too fast. You should work hard right now to slow your eating way the hell down. You'll be learning new skills to use with your new sleeve that you'll use the rest of your life, and this is the time to learn them. You've had practice slowing things down before, right?

Yeah, I have always been a fast eater, and I wanted to try to eat slower so good advice. I was worried that by eating slowly I would just be able to eat more liquid/soup though!

I have to admit that when I eat pureed food I can't eat a whole lot, but more than I expected to be able to. I can probably manage 3-4 tablespoons of food before feeling full. I guess this is normal?

Seems like things are on track with that amount of pureed food. Liquids will go right through, so you can't really judge by that.
You don't mention if you are avoiding drinking for 30 min or more after eating. Don't want to wash the food out, you need those nutrients.....also if you drink after you eat, you won't feel as full if it washes through...

Yes I am trying to avoid drinking at least 30 mins either side of eating. Generally 60 mins afterwards. I guess I'm just panicking that the surgeon has left too much stomach, and I'm going to not be as restricted as I expected to me.

I can see your logic, liquids should just pass through me. Should I reduce my liquid meals from say 400g to 200g as per my diet guide, or continue eating what I can in terms of liquid meals?

Hi sleevedguy, when I was a few weeks out I could consume about 6-8 bites of food depending on the consistency. 8 if it was something liquid and thin and 6 if its something solid and heavy. Im almost 5 months out and its still about the same. I usually get the hiccups when I get full. When you start the next phase of food you should start feeling retrictions. Just dont over do it to soon. Give your sleeve the time to heal. I know its easier said than done, I remember I couldnt wait for the day I could eat refried beans and cheese just so that I could chew on something. Good luck with your journey.....

At first try to make your meal last 30 min. Also the sweating can be a sign of being to full, some sneeze I have a single hiccup. Liquids for many are easy but try to keep your meals small and at least 4 times a day. Fallow you post-op package it should have a guide to your meal sizes and how often you should be eating. Also many soups don't have a lot of protein so you wont feel as full from then as you would having a protein shake.

    Good luck

    Post-bariatric reactive hypoglycemia ...

    Read this. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/ser...gastric-bypass

When this complication happens (typically a year or longer post-op), it happens mostly to gastric bypass patients. But it can also occur to about 3% of sleeve patients.

My own theory is that it tends to happens to those patients who ate very low-carb during the losing phase. For that reason (and just in case) I didn't go the low-carb route. I still lost just fine.
