So I heard that the gherlin grows back starting at 6 mos, has anyone noticed the return of hunger around 6 mos?
I must tell you that I have not stopped feeling hunger ever. I am 3 months post- op. I thought as some have suggested that it was heartburn. Not so. I eat and fill up easily but it is frequent small meals. It is working as I have lost 50 lbs. I try to drink plenty of water when I feel that hunger and it helps.
I see this statement posted quite often, and I don't understand. My program never stated I would not get hungry. I do get hungry, but, I can say it is no where near the hunger I felt all these years. I just feel like I am a normal eater now. I get hungry, I eat and the hunger goes away. Before I never got full unless I went to a buffet and ate tons of food. Now I eat 8 oz of food at meal times, and I am full. I do eat every 3 hours, but not a meal, I eat 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. I also, as Paloma posted, drink fluids in between. Every skinny person I know gets hungry, so why would it be different for us who have had WLS surgery?
Hi. I am one of those that wasn't hungry my first 6 months. I could go all day and not eat, which is not good. It did seem at the 6 or 7 month mark I started getting hungry, not necessarily craving anything, but just had the feeling of needing to put something in my stomach. Now, I am a year out and I seem to get hungry every 3 to 4 hours and I eat more now too. As long as I eat when my stomach tells me, I can stay on track real well. I keep a count of calories too, plus exercise. I have let some bad habits creep back in but I try not to indulge until the weekend and not much. I will let myself enjoy food, but now I can have a couple of bites and be very satisfied than when I was before surgery wanting seconds and thirds. Just always keep in your mind that this is a tool and not the solution. You learn to eat the way you are supposed to and it is so much easier to stick to that way of eating. Good luck!
I am not a doctor, but I do have my own theories on hunger and Gherlin after surgery. I think that people often misconstrue the fundus as being the only producer of this hormone, so naturally they assume that if the fundus is removed so will the feeling of hunger. Seems logical, but not really. In fact, there are other parts of the body that contribute to the production of this hormone, so it is never eradicated from the body, and lets face it it is not normal to never feel hunger. We all have to eat, eating helps keep us alive.
What would make sense to me however, is that our bodies are specifically designed to keep us alive, and the body is pretty amazing at doing this task. So, if we have a surgery that removes one of the main produces of a hormone that creates the hunger sensation. I think that over time the body re-optimizes those other producers of the hunger hormone to compensate for the loss of the fundus. While in my experience after surgery hunger did come back over time, it is nothing like what it was before I had the surgery, which leads me to believe that maybe the body doesn't fully produce the hormone to the capacity that it once did, but in my experience it certainly did come back over time.
Here are some really good videos that I found that explains some thing pertaining to hunger and eating after surgery. Check them out maybe they will help you or others out there:
I will have to post the 2nd one below in another comment as we are only allowed to post one video per comment
^^^ This is an extraordinary video! Thank you so much for posting this, Melanie! I wish everyone who's considering VSG surgery and who has VSG surgery would watch this video.
I'm not an MD, but everything this guy says seems to make abundant sense to me.

The only thing I am confused about.....
The doc doesn't speak about protein and how much we need to consume. He refers to eating 1. 2. 3. Lbs of spinach. Heck I couldn't possibly eat one. As it is I HAVE to supplement my meals with protein shakes/bars to get In enough protein! I don't think my sleeve is too small the most I can eat is a whole yogurt.
I was never told that I would not be hungry. During the first several months, I found that I would eat out of necessity more than out of hunger, I went through a phase where I had no interest in food at all. I am 15 months out now, and I do get hungry when it's time to eat. I joke that I'm like a newborn, and have to eat something small every 2 hours. it has worked for me.
I never stopped feeling hungry. But I am satisfied more quicker and subsequently eat less.
