I’m one week shy of being 4 months post-op. As of this morning’s weigh-in, I’ve lost 60 pounds during the last (nearly) 6 months. This includes all the weight I lost on my own pre-pre-op diet and the surgeon’s pre-op diet and since VSG surgery. I have 25 more pounds to go to reach goal. Damn, this is going fast!
Yesterday, I had the second post-op consultation with my surgeon’s physician’s assistant who specializes in bariatric matters. She’s extremely knowledgeable and up on all the latest research about WLS. She gave me kudos for my post-op weight loss, calorie intake, protein intake, record-keeping, walking and aquarobics exercise.
She also said it’s now time for me to:
1. Raise my daily calories to 1,000
2. Increase my plant protein intake (beans, legumes, whole grains)
3. Taper down on my strong acid-reducer (Protonix) and gradually return to my lower-acid reducer I was using pre-op (Ranitidine)
4. Add nuts and nut-butters and seeds (flax, chia) and vegetable oils (olive oil, coconut oil)
5. Increase the amount of plant fiber in my diet up to 25 grams, e.g., more beans, legumes, whole grains, fruits and fresh berries
6. Add resistance exercises with bands, dumbbells, or weight machines – and find ways to do some exercises while watching TV, so I am less sedentary
7. When I do indulge with alcohol, have only a single drink
8. And because I have a bad cold right now, to drink hot/warm decaffeinated teas and broths prior to mealtime to clear out any respiratory mucus that’s drained into stomach to lessen restriction and increase my appetite (That’s kind of gross, but could be helpful info for others suffering during this cold / flu season.)
I offer my P.A.’s tips NOT to suggest that anyone else should be doing these things (because there are many different post-op regimens and many individual differences among us), but because many here are naturally curious about others’ experiences.
Continued best wishes to us all!
