Default I need a quicker wit!!

I was out running errands on my lunch break and I swung by the buffet to get some soup to take back to work. They didn't have my usual chicken noodle, so I got a small bowl of chili with a little shredded cheese on top.

As I was paying, the cashier says "My, you don't eat much do you?" "Uh, well, uh, just need something to keep me going, uh, well, uh." I was really at a loss for words. My whole life I have been a volume eater and definitely not used to anyone commenting on how little I eat.

I really need a quicker wit. I am the kind of person who thinks of the right thing to say 10 minutes after I should have said it. Any good one liners for people who comment on your little portions?

I'm like you, I never quite know the right thing to say. When you ask for a box at a restaurant, people always think you didn't like the food. When I don't order anything, just share with my husband, I typically say I already ate.

I love chicken tenders, hadn't had them since surgery over a year ago, and talked a waitress last week into letting me order them off the kid's menu. She looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for a box for the two out of three tenders I didn't eat.

Hubby's answer for every situation is always "She doesn't eat much."

"I handle marathon sex better when I'm not really full". Diversion comments with sexual inuendo usually throws people off and shuts their mouths. But I usually reserve stuff like that for church folks who are being super nosy, and never to men. The thirst is too real.

She probably didn't mean to insult you, she is use to people purchasing a lot more food.
Maybe it could have been a compliment?

If you wanted to be a little insulting (I doubt that you are, you seem very nice), you could have said:
"I only purchase a lot of food when it is good" and smile.

If you really wanted to be mean (but not insulting to the cashier) say in a sad way:
"Yes, ever since I started to receive chemo treatments for my inoperable cancer, my appetite has been small".
(I don't wish that on you (knock on wood), but they would feel like a piece of $h!+ for making an unsolicited remark like that to a stranger and would probably think twice about doing so in the future.)

But if you really wanted to be nasty, here's a start:
"I lost my appetite with the smell and flies in here. Could you please close your legs!!!!!!!!".

Actually, i don't waste much emotional energy on this.

I think that for most casual interactions like this one... a smile and a nod is plenty. Or perhaps you can say something like "gotta watch what I eat"

Where this gets a little trickier is people who you actually care about their feelings, opinions and have a legitimate reason to question. For example, I am dating someone and he has asked me a few times about my portion sizes. I have two answers - one funny and one serious. My funny one is that I am saving my carbs and calorie alotment for wine. My serious one - and I had to really explain this to him "I am 11 inches shorter than you, female, and I have a desk job, if I ate as much as you, I would weigh as much or more than you and I don't want that". He didn't have much choice but to say "good point" and the subject went away.

With time you get used to it and it becomes natural to just agree and say " I'm not very hungry" my favorite reply that always gets a smile and leaves them at a loss for words is " Eat small, Be small!" I say it like I mean it! You gotta OWN it and make no apologies, you will get a kick outta the changing expression on their face as your words sink in! ~Rainbow

Ok, you are getting out of hand here!!! Too funny.

No, she wasn't being insulting. I guess I was just caught off guard and I like to be able to make people laugh a little. The funny thing about using Ann's comment that "you should see what I had for dinner last night." is that it is not dishonest in any way. I might have had just a little wee bit for dinner last night, no one knows!!
