I'm two months post-op.
In the last few days I've realized I can guzzle and gulp water again -- almost like I could before VSG-surgery. This will make it much easier to get all my water in from now on.
I think it also means my hiatal hernia repair (a small one) has now fully healed and that my new tummy is starting to be less swollen.If anyone knows differently, please chime in.
For those who are newly post-op, it looks like you'll be able to drink water just fine in a few months. In the meantime, sip, sip, sip.
EDIT: Lee6Lee's post below (#8) shows that this change is NOT universal. See what her experience with water (at 6 months out) has been.

That's awesome Ann! I was able to guzzle last week but....at one point it felt like everything was backing up in my throat. Are you able to guzzle without having everything back up?

Jules -- it is freakin' awesome!
Sovanna -- that's right, no water backs up. Goes right on down. (Of course, I'm not drinking with food.) I'm not kidding -- this happened almost overnight. I'm just a few weeks further out than you, so you should see this change soon.
For the record, I'm not experiencing yet less restriction of food volume. So my limit of 2-3-4 ounces of food at a time (depending on the food) still applies.

That'll help! I know I was also so happy to find guzzling abilities starting to return!
(It has been a while since I could down a pint of beer in 5 seconds... these days, I'm very happy to be able to finish a pint of water in 5 minutes!)
Male, age 46, 6'1" tall. Starting BMI was 39 at 2 weeks pre-op. My weight loss chart.
BMI=35 at 3 weeks post-op! BMI=30 at 15 weeks post-op! BMI=25 at 9 months post-op!
Reached ultimate goal within 5 months of surgery: free of all prescription medicines! My blog.

I agree with that too! I haven't had any trouble getting my 64oz in the past few days! Its a great feeling!

yeah its nice when you can start drinking decent amounts again. I never had any trouble drinking compared to what other folks have said on here but it was nice when I could really start downing large amounts again.

I can't drink real fast. My stomach is even more contrary 6 months out. No complaints!
