I am having a lot of problems with heartburn now. I take an OTC acid reducer, use the Maalox, nothing seems to be helping. Any suggestions, fellow sleevers. I am 2 weeks out from surgery.
I had to go back on a generic version of Prilosec after a few weeks, post surgery. I'll be weaning off it over the next 2 months.
Give you surgeon a call & hope you feel better soon.
Yes, absolutely call your surgeon. You shouldn't have to suffer for this.
Pre-op, I was on Ranitidine 150 mg. once a day (prescribed by my PCP). That worked fine for me then. But post-op, I was having a bit more reflux, especially at night.
So my surgeon immediately changed my Rx to Protonix (Pantoprazole, 40 mg.) once a day. Solved the problem like a charm. I'll take this for 3 months, then we'll see how things go without it.
Definitely don't suffer something you don't need to suffer.

Yes, you should call your surgeon. Protonix will kick it in the butt, it is an acid stopper. It doesn't just reduce acid, protonix stops the production of acid.
So.. absolutely, call your Surgeon... tell them how awful it is. They should help you.
Congrats on being on the banded side!
I was on protonix and it did nothing for my acid, however Pepcid AC OMG within maybe 1/2 hour my acid goes away. But if I forget it I will have an episode! Last night I had one and I got up to take my pepcid and within a 1/2 hour I was fine and fell back to sleep. I think everyone needs to find their go to or what works for them. I made the dr give me protonix and well again it did nothing for me even at twice a day taking it. So you might be doing some shopping around to find what works for you good luck!
Pepcid ac works for me too, also I take herbs in between because I don't want to be on acid reducers forever because of long term side effects. Sleep on a wedge pillow , it's uncomfortable but helps. Take an acid reducer right before bedtime so you won't wake up at 2 a.m. with heartburn. Also bought an aloe drink with peppermint etc. from Amazon. Just watch out for formulas with licorice cause it can raise blood pressure. Am researching food allergies on utube because they may contribute to heart burn also.
^^^ Good point about the hiatal hernia.
Turns out, I had one. (Had no idea.) My surgeon fixed it during VSG surgery.

I also had a hiatal hernia and they fixed it when they did my sleeve surgery. I was coughing for years and got misdiagnosed. My hiatal hernia was a rolling one and it rolled back into place when they did the tests on me so nobody saw it. I was so happy the doctor saw it and fixed it for me.
