Default VSG in Mexico with Dr. Kelly

    Hello everyone!

I am scheduled to have a VSG w/Dr. Kelly in Mexico in 5 days and I'm still nervous. I'm not too sure what it is, might be a mixture of everything. First off, I've never been to Mexico even though I live only 5 hours away. I've seen many people on these types of forums who've flown in just to get thier surgery. I have no idea what to expect. Despite all the critisism I get for choosing to have my surgery done in Mexico, IM SO EXCITED! I know this is going to be a life changing journey for me. Im just stuck in the hurry up and get it over with and start the weight loss mode. My pre-op diet is not the easiest thing to do. Im a meat eater and love to eat everything fattening. Ugh....Im hungry just typing about it. Anyway, can anyone give me a step by step on how their journey was from arriving to San Diego, their drive there, the hospital, the hotel stay, the drive back? I guess Im looking for some reassurance that I've made the best decision and going with Dr. Kelly in Mexico. Thanks!

Definitely search Dr. Kelly in the forums! You are going to love the experience not to worry! I had Dr. Kelly and almost feel guilty that the experience was so easy and enjoyable!

Hey, your surgery is the day after mine. I'm having it done on the 26th and I have 2 other sleeve sisters having it done same day with Dr. kelly so when you come you'll find 3 girls very groggy just out of surgery. LOL. good luck and yes...pre-op sucks. I start clear liquids on Friday and i'm totally not looking forward to that. the shakes were hard enough.

mlola, I feel you on the shakes! Ugh...they're not my favorite. But yes.....Im so nervous Ahhhhh! Its good to know that I wont be alone. As far as I know, you're the only one I've seen on here who is going around the time I am! My weight has been up and down, up and down after I had my first child. I've tried every diet there is and let me tell you, the hardest part is maintaining. Diets out there do work and a lot of them don't but they do get old. Im hoping this will be it for me. I''ve gained over 50lbs in the last year...I just cant wait until I can get it all off and then some. Good luck on your journey!

OMGosh, I cannot express to you enough, how much you are going to love Dr. Kelly and the whole thing. i had mine on the 15th, and I really have no complaints. We got picked up in San Diego at the airport by Hector's niece, very nice young lady. She drove us straight to the hotel, ( we found out later that we were suppose to go onto hospital for lab that day) but that was just a little mix up.

Me and my daughter were in the restraunt in the hotel (which by the way is very beautiful, the peublo amigo), when down came the glass elevators and there was Dr. Kelly, he came over to see if I had any questions and concerns, he was awesome.

Next day the hotel van took 3 of us and companions to the hospital. They immediently staRTED doing all the pre-op testing. Nurses were great, some didn't talk english, but would find one that could if you need something.

I had my suregery, and within an hour, I was up walking the halls. The next morning you shower and that makes you feel so much better!! Just walk, walk , walk, this will help you. I was not nauseated one time. Stayed 2 nights in hospital. Then the 3rd day i was realeased, after my leak test, and iv taken out. The van from hotel came back and got me and took me to hotel. The people there treat you like a queen, when we pulled up the opened the doors and helped us out of the van, carried our baggage. That day I went shopping some. I felt great.

On the day we were to go home, Hector's brother and his wife took us to San Diego airport, we left way early cause you never know how long the line is going over the boarder, but we had a medical pass that took us through pretty fast.

We had never seen the ocean before , so on the way he took us by the ocean and we took pictures and had a great time. Everyone was so very nice.
I hope this helped, and if you have any questions please message me. I would be glad to give you my number to text me too. This is the best decision I have ever made in my life.

Gwen, that is so helpful. I'm not the one who originally asked this questions, but I'm being sleeved by Dr. Kelly on the 5th of January, so I like to read all I can about others' experiences. I've heard only great things.

Thank you so much gwen! OMG...This is the most detailed information I've received. I regret going through a patient coordinator because of the dull and late responses I've received. I can honestly say that I have been relying on posts like yours and am very greatful there are people like you to enlighten others like me about VSG in Mexico. I can't thank you enough for putting me at ease.

I was wondering...Did you have a drain? I seen on another thread that Dr. Kelly does not use these anymore. Also, did Dr. Kelly visit you at the hotel after your surgery? What kind of clothes did you bring? LOL...20 questions huh? Sorry...I just dont know. I want to bring comfy clothes like sweats and all but I don't usually go out shopping in sweats. I guess it wouldn't matter huh? Nobody knows me there anyway. hahaha. Im going to Mexico the day before my surgery becausethey said that they needed to run some tests. Did you go stay at the hotel then go to the hospital and then back to the hotel?

Im so glad your surgery went well! I hope I get the same treatment as you! Thanks again!

Mjfidel, who are you using as your coordinators? I have to say mine haven't been the most responsive either; sometimes I don't hear back a response to an email for days. However, I had no choice as Trish coordinates for a hospital that won't take "lower" BMI (below 35) patients.

    Thanks Julie!

grammargirl...I went through alighterme.com. I didn't really understand at first that they were the middleman but Linda assured me that she works for Dr. Kelly. Im not sure how that works but thats what she told me. She was really good at first and had a response for all my questions. I felt bad because I asked a million questions and she tried her best to answer them all. What scared me the most was that after I sent my deposit, the response time from her became longer! That totally scared me but she said she received it and all is well. My driver, Hector, just called me today to see what time I was going to arrive in San Diego. He sounds like a nice man, very friendly. He gave me his cell number so I could contact him when Im on the way and I gave him my cell so we could stay in contact. I can't go back on having already chose a patient coordinator so...I'm looking forward to getting to Mexico and meeting Dr. Kelly. From what I've seen on the Internet, looks like I will have enough time to actually enjoy my vacation. After the surgery anyways.

Im glad to hear nothing but great things about Dr. Kelly, the hotel, and shopping in Mexico!

I had surgery with Dr Kelly 12/5/11 and had an amazing experience! No regrets here. You can see my experience post under my profile. I would do it again tomorrow! I am a paramedic and went back to work at 10 days post op without any difficulties! Would recommend him and MI doctors Hospital to anyone.

Hola! Thank you everyone who helped me go through this experience. I have to admit that researching online and signing up for these forums helped me out a lot. I am 2 days post op, still here in Mexico. All is well, surgery went well, and I am doing fine. I have so much to say but right now, I don't have my laptop to be able to comfortably type everything but will update as soon as I get home. Dr. Kelly and his staff are great and I am so glad that I made this decision. As of now, I am officially sleeved! Ttyl. Adios from Mexico!

Congrats & so glad to hear you are doing well. I was researching Alvarez but today have been researching Dr Kelly A LOT and leaning towards him. Glad to hear from someone going through it now...makes my decision a little easier. Take care & can't wait to hear your progress!

congrats! I loved my experience with Dr Kelly. I was sleeved 12/5/11 and it was one if the best decisions I have ever made. It seemed to easy to have been considered an invasive surgery! Staff was great and Dr Kelly came by the hotel daily to check on me.......however every time but one I was out shopping and exploring TJ! :-P

I am 3.5 wks out and have lost 24 lbs 18 of which has been post op (but I started out 214 and with a lower BMI so I unfortunately will loose slower) needless to say once you get past the liquids and pureed stage it gets much better!

    wish you a speedy recovery!

What a way to start a new year!
