Just adding to the Dr Kelly praise! He was supposed to be out of town the week I came in, but the coordinators did not know that and scheduled me anyway. Instead of asking them to reschedule me, he *canceled* his trip! If he had said something I would have picked another date! But I didnt know until I was actually there. It was a quiet week though! Only one other patient who stayed a little longer than expected I think. At first I thought that must be why he spent so much time with me, but I found he does that with everyone! He talked to me at least an hour a day in the hospital, and came by the hotel several times - staying up to 2-3 hrs just chatting! His wife and son came by too. Its just a whole different world there when it comes to medicine, and medical tourism is booming business. I can see why - it was unlike any medical experience i have EVER had in my lifetime. I was chatting with someone the other day about how we all do so much research on our doctor in MX and worry about his complication rate and other issues... Have you EVER done that to your AMerican doctor? The doc who delivered my son was just a random one the state assigned me to at the time... I certainly had no clue where he did his training or what certifications he had. And I never questioned the guy who took out my gall bladder. Just went where my insurance told me too. So its weird to even think about "shopping" for your doctor! But people freak out when they hear "Mexico" like you are going for a back-alley abortion or something, and nothing could be farther from the truth.
It's hard to dispel the persistent myth that many people seem to hold about surgery in Mexico (and Mexico in general). The media is part of the problem. They love to play up the drug cartel/gansta/killing stuff going on in Mexico. And of course if someone had a bad surgery experience in Mexico and died that would be all over the news, not the many thousands of cases that went beautifully. Think about it, can Mexico possibly be any worse than the crazies we have in the US who load up four or six guns and go into a school, post office, McDonalds or former workplace and shoot to kill as many innocent people as they can?
Okay, we know that Mexico is still a relative poor country, with regulations that might not be quite as stringent than the US. However, as any of us who have had surgery in Mexico know, the care you get there is BETTER than anything you get in the US.
Why? Here's my explanation for why it is better. Our health care in the US has been slowly deteriorating while costs continue to skyrocket. The more care we provide, the sicker our population gets (okay that may be a chicken and egg conundrum) because we primarily focus on treatment of diseases AFTER they become a big problem in someone's life. We stink at preventive care. Also, we can't provide health care to much of our population because they can't afford it or don't have insurance. How ridiculous is that?
We have dropped to 37th in the world in health care, yet the myth persists (spurred on by insurance companies, medical organizations and lobbyists) that we are far superior to everywhere else. Untrue!
So, Mexico ranks in at 61st in the world. But let's think about that number, because it takes into consideration all the health care the entire country of Mexico. However, the hospitals near the border that cater to medical tourism are by far the best in Mexico, because they need to be that way to keep Americans and Canadians coming. Because of the high standards, nice newer facilities and best well-trained doctors that flock to treat foreigners with money, the facilities and care there are terrific for self payers who come from other countries. Not to mention, much of the money we "foreigners" spend for health care in placed back into the health care infrastructure, for the facilities, equipment, nurses, for surgeons to attend more training and conferences, and so forth. Simply put, the health care we receive in Mexico far exceeds the typical care we get in the US, the "37th best" health care provider in the world.
In Mexico they treat us a valued customers. In the US, the insurance companies are the customers because they are the ones paying the hospitals, and much of the health care system treats us patients as tiresome nuisances. Sunflower's recent experience shows how utterly ridiculous it has gotten, and unfortunately that type of situation is not that rare. Many of us know this because we GAVE UP on the US health care "debacle" and went to Mexico for our surgery, where we were treated like royalty. ;-)
I don't know what more I can say, so I'll put my soapbox away for now.
You can now go to Dr. Kelly direct and he will guide you through the process!
I was sleeved on 11/25 and he gave me all of his contact info - love him and 199% confident in his ability!
He has a new website as well so you do not have to go to a coordinator. Let Dr. Kelly handle the details and handle your care!
Weight loss surgery Mexico
I know this post will really set some of the coordinators off - but OH WELL!
Laura, eloquent, well thought out and oh so true. I would go to Mexico again in a heartbeat, and plan to for my lifts, nips and tucks when i reach my goal weight. I have never had such good care as i received there. I, like most others went because it was cheaper than in the states. But i will return because i have such confidence in their abilities.

Several of the doctors that do WLS in Tijuana are all close in the price that they charge. I went with Dr F Garcia and he was in the same price range. I had to have a little more surgery as I had my lapband removed and had to have a scope before surgery and then the sleeve. My surgery was around $6000 which is close to what Dr Kelly and Dr Almanza charge. I guess that is it a personal choice as to which surgeon you pick. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Garcia and Hospital Mi to anyone. Glad to share my experience or answer any questions for anyone out there.

Some time ago a person who runs a strip mall "clinic" started a very bad competition by lowering the prices to the max so in order to keep in bussiness we needed to do the same thing, sadly to say but this is what happened. My very good friend Aceves in Mexicali doesnt have any competition and I dont personally know Alvarez in Monterrey but who wants to go there anyway with all the violence going on in that former beatiful and industrial city (Monterrey). Bottom line go with the surgeon your heart tells you, but research first and after that research more and more and more
Have a wonderful day
