    Default Pre-op diet question

How many people had solid foods in their pre-op diet? As opposed to all liquids? I am allowed to replace my breakfast and dinner with an acceptable protein shake but for lunch I am supposed to have 2 items from my protein list, 1-3 items from the veggie list and 1-2 items from my starch list (ex. Today for lunch I had a half a cup of fat-free cottage cheese, 2/3 cup brown rice and one cup of broccoli). I have seen a lot of people posting about their preop liquid diet but not a lot of people posting about pre-op diets with solid foods

It is unnerving how varied doctors' approaches to pre & post op diet is. I always felt it should be more of a set standard. My doc is super cautious & had me on all liquid 2wks before & I'm now halfway into my two weeks post op same diet. I can have low carb/sugar protein shakes, SF popsicles & jello, broth, cream soup strained, light yogurt, & SF/caffeine free non-carbonated beverages. It. Is. Brutal! lol However it's incredibly important so I respect it. Preoperatively it shrinks your liver, helps you detox from sugar & caffeine, & prepares you for the low level of energy you'll have after only consuming around 400cal a day. Keeps your body that's trying to heal from being shocked as badly by that energy drop. Unsure why he'd allow solids. : /

Every doctor is different and pre-op diet is based many factors. The goal of pre-op diet is to shrink liver to help your doctor safely preform your sleeve. My pre-op diet was started 5 days before surgery. I had a protein shake for breakfast and lunch than 3oz of lean protein and 1 cup steamed veggies (no starchy veggies) for three days, than day three take laxative and start clear liquids next day. Best of luck to you.

Do whatever your doctor says. They are all different. I had 5 days of liquids only. Some people have 2 weeks of liquids, some have a diet like yours, and others nothing after midnight before the surgery. So who knows!

Mine was similar to yours but the last 3 days were only liquids. I only had 9 days of pre op.

I was allowed to eat food up until 1pm the day before. The two weeks before were lean protein and veggies. Never had to do liquids.

My doctor had me on the medifast diet supplements for 2 weeks. All prepackaged food high in protein. All doctors are different in their recommendations.

My doctor required full liquid pre-op diet for 2 weeks. Protein Shakes, Broth, Sugar Free Gelatin and that was about it. Oh, and sugar free Power Aid. But all doctors are different. They want you to shrink your live as much as possible before surgery to help with the procedure.

    Best of luck to you.

    Regards,

    Tommy

My pre-op consisted of basically all liquids but for my evening meal I could have a lean meat and veggie. They are all different, but once I got past the first few days I was no longer "hangry" and did really well LOL
