Default OMG - Dumping Syndrome 2 weeka post-VSG

Pain, cramping, explosive you-know-what, anxiety, sweat, heart palpitations...
I had no idea what was going on this afternoon.

After reading up after this attack I looked up Dumping Syndrome....
I had thought "Dumping Syndrome" was when you exceeded your sleeve capacity--but nope--this is what i had.

I had no idea about the link with having too much sugar and insulin triggering this awful experience.

Definitely learned the truth while having a 20 min panic-gastric attack....exactly 30 min after sipping slowly half of a Green Tea Frappucino--which i ordered "skinny"--which is low fat milk, no whip...but i think same sugar.

Holy cow. Glad to have had this experience that now will make me hyper aware of anything with sugar or high-carb. I suggest everyone educate yourself on this before you have it.

A question I couldn't seem to find out there...give that you "lose" all fluids in your body, i was very gun shy to start taking sips of liquids again...but did slowly while i laid down. What do you all do following these attacks besides lay down in fetal position like i did...

I only had that happen once and it was not to that extent. It was the first food I ate post op. A laughing cow cheese wedge. It passed pretty quickly as it was not much. I don't think it is that common for sleeve patients to have dumping syndrome, more common in bypass patients. My nut/surgeon specifically told me to avoid high carb items. So following this advice is probably why I never experienced it other than that one time. You do need to stay hydrated, though. And try to rest. It is a pretty traumatic experience to your body.

Starbucks Skinny Latte's definitely have nonfat milk and sugar-free syrups. You should definitely complain if you think you consumed regular sugar. Your cup sticker should indicate what they put in it.

Personally, the only scare I had once was when I was not following the "no water 30 minutes before or after rule."

At about 3-months post op my partner and I visited Santa Fe, NM and we went to a chocolateria that a friend recommended is a must. I had pure 100% cacao hot chocolate which came in demi cup like they serve espressos and I got a huge rush and felt like fainting, but nothing gastric related. It was thick and deliciousnessly heavenly! And that feeling was surreal! But also my nonsleeved partner felt the same!

At two weeks my only experiment was making a blended Broccoli Cheddar soup I could not tolerate. I had to hold off on Broccoli until 4-5 months post op.

I didn't think that sleeve patients had dumping syndrome.
I have felt yucky when I overdo it. Like when I had my first creamed soup after surgery, it was so good, and I had just a bit too much. I didn't make that mistake again, LOL.

I'm not sure if you had dumping syndrome, but even a skinny frap has like 50g of sugar.
4 months out, I still done consume that much carbs/sugar in a day. I would just let it give you more awareness of what you are consuming.

Anyone can get dumping syndrome, even people who have never had weight loss surgery. But definitely gastric bypass patients get it more. Sleeve patients don't get it as much as bypass patients, but more than regular non-wls people.
My unsolicited opinion: for anyone trying to get slim and healthy, weight loss surgery or not, frappuccinos of any kind are not your friend and will not help you. Good luck!

I'm an old-timer sleever and yes, in the beginning, I experienced what could be diagnosed as dumping syndrome. I don't know what triggered it. Several years out I rarely experience it but in the beginning I did. I don't know if it's that or a low-blood sugar episode but I can relate to it. I had to lay down when it happened.

I experienced dumping twice and I know exactly way. I disobeyed my doctors orders and the first time I had 4 Hershey's chocolate squares. 30 minutes later while doing a mall walk, I had to use the rest room IMMEDIATELY. The second time was last week when I allowed myself to get very hungry and I had BBQ. It was not the meat but the fact that I ate it too fast and I had too much. I felt awful and once I vomited, that offered some relief.

Don't eat the foods and beverages that you know you should not have and take time eating and drinking. Consume small amounts as instructed by your dr and you should be OK.

    I learned the hard way.
