    Default Coffee

    Happy Friday everyone!

I'm just in the beginning stages of getting sleeved. I have to have 6 months of nutrition classes. I've just had my first one, so like I said, very early stages.

One of the things she mentioned was that I would not be able to have caffeinated coffee any longer..ergh! Just curious if any of your veteran sleevers find this is true? I love myself some coffee in the AM.

Any insight you can provide is appreciated. If it's out, I need to start decaffeinating myself now!

    Thanks!

    Default Re: Coffee

    Hmmm... kind of harsh!

My nutritionist recommended to cut down on coffee, but that's when she thought I was the type to put all kinds of crap in it. I drink coffee mostly black. I use whole milk once in a great while. Even though she was recommended by my surgeon's office I got conflicting advice. Someone in my surgeon's office said black coffee was ok in moderation. 1-2 cups a day.

Having said that, I weaned myself from coffee preop just because I did a preop cleanse about 3 months prior. No one forced me nor was it required of me. I just started eating cleaner snd more nutrient dense foods, then about six weeks prior I started replacing one meal a day with a Protein shake, then gradually two.

I started adding coffee to my protein shakes or rather I added the pre made vanilla Premier shake as creamer to my coffee. about 1 month post op. I'm back to drinking coffe 1-2 cups a day. But to be honest, I don't want/need coffee like I did.

It's important to know that each Bariatric surgeon has their own way of doing things. AND most importantly they are suggestions. Like for instance my nutritionist gave me a list of foods I should eat for my two week liver cleanse diet, it was all processed foods. That is was not and it is not acceptable to me. How is a health professional adding margarine to that list? Or boxed low fat macaroni? Nope. I tossed that away and did what worked for me. Granted. I told her what I was going to do and she approved. She told me that a lot of obese people are used to convenience foods so they made that list based on their research. I just think they got off the FDA food pyramid.

Just talk to your surgeon office, oh by the way when I got my 3-day clear liquid diet list guess what was on there? Coffee/Tea ok??? Really!!!

I'm three years out. I have coffee every day with cream and sugar. Every situation is different, every surgeon is different. My surgeon's philosophy is that you have a built in control system. Listen to your sleeve and stay active.

They say no caffeine as it can cause acid reflux so after you have surgery if you don't have any reflux give it a try if you are having reflux issues I would avoid it.

My doctor said I could have caffeinated coffee at 6wks. I drink coffee with cream and Splenda. There are way to many different kinds of nutritional advice or requirements. I can't believe there isn't a standard way of doing the pre & post diets. Good Luck with your journey

I found in the beginning I couldn't tolerate coffee but later on when I healed I could. Of course, keep it to one or two cups. I need it in the A.M.

I've never drank caffeinated coffee. Ever. I've had decaf since I began drinking it over 40 years ago. Even the occassional Starbucks frappucino is decaf.

I was never told I would have to give up caffeine. I only didn't drink coffee for 3 days pre op when I was only allowed to have protein shakes, broth, and water. I started drinking coffee again 1 week post op. Have drank it every day for the past 21 weeks. No issues whatsoever. I can tell you that every single surgeon and nutritionist has completely different rules.

Yep for sure every NUT and surgeon are different. I Had three months before approval of the do's and don'ts. I am a coffee hound and live the the land where Starbucks was founded, not to mention a coffee stand on every block. My veins are filled with coffee not blood! I was told NO more of any kind, no more caffeinated or un- caffeinated. I have questioned this matter and was told:
#can cause or lead to reflux
    #can cause bowel irritation
#acid levels can cause upset stomach, nausea
    #caffeine with drawl, headaches

So yes i have stopped preop. Have bought sugar free syrups to add to my protein shakes. I understand that a 350 calorie 28oz flavored latte is a lot of empty calories that fill fat cells

They say caffeine is a diuretic and fluid intake can be a problem early on. Of course that topic is highly controversial. And there is also the coffee/GERD connection.

So being the good little VSG patient, I weaned off caffeine and then switched from coffee to tea in anticipation of possible coffee issues postop. Glad I did because i couldn't tolerate coffee for almost a year postop. It wasn't the caffeine, it was the acidity of the coffee that caused bad heartburn pain for me. Finally I was able to start drinking it again. Heck, some days I'll drink 2 24oz travel mugs of coffee, both decaf and caf depending on the time of day. However, when I do occasionally get indigestion or stomach pains, I take Zantac and cut out coffee for a few days and it never turns to full blown reflux.

Ha! I ❤️ "being the good little VSG patient"

And I had not considered that coffee can cause or exasperate acid reflux. I haven't had a lot of issues with it, but certainly something to keep in mind.

I was advised to avoid coffee the first the first month or so while my stomach healed. Now I drink coffee without issue. I use Torani sugar free syrup and a little Fairlife milk (non fat in the beginning, but I was told to move onto 2% a couple of months ago).
