New Member - Sleeve Gastrectomy Or Sleeve Bypass?

Hi everyone,

After trying medications for a year I have finally decided to take the plunge and begin the process for Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery. I am nervous about making the wrong decision in terms of which procedure to get. I have been bouncing between the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and the sleeve bypass surgery. I am leaning toward the sleeve gastrectomy, but would like to hear from others who have gotten either procedure and what ultimately lead them to their decision. Thanks in advance!

Mostly, it will relate to your height to weight ratio and whether or not you have acid reflux.

The surgeon in the practice I went to asked our opinion and then made their recommendation on the one most appropriate.

I do have acid reflux and currently take medications for it. I am worried my surgeon will recommend the bypass instead. Mainly because I am actually scared of the "dumping syndrome" that is common with bypass surgeries and the higher risk of malnutrition. Does anyone have any experience with either of these risks? If so, how does it affect your day-to-day living?

I have GERD which is about as severe of reflux as you can get I went through the sleeve just fine as since surgery have experienced zero heart burn or felt any reflux.

I had a hiatal hernia, found during surgery and was repaired. I never had any kind of heartburn before, and when my doctor told me about the repair, he said "you'll never have to worry about getting heartburn". That is comforting.

My decision to get sleeved over bypass had to do with less complications rate and less issues with dumping and absorption issues. I compared the two a lot. And I found a lot of good info on www.obesitycoverage.com. Good luck on your decision.
