    Default Meals

    Hello,

I've already had the lap band surgery. Needless to say it was unsuccessful. I'm now considering having the gastric sleeve surgery. However, I can't help but to think about still enjoying eating wheras, the gastric sleeve surgery is permanent.

Does anyone enjoy eating, are you you able to fit in three meals daily, and are there any foods that you are unable to eat since your surgery?

    Thank you,
    Tmack1

I had to force myself to eat and drink for the first 4 months. I had no appetite and it was all such a chore to get in all my protein and water. I intitially couldn't tolerate artificial sweeteners, plain water, lactose, salads, and coffee. But by 6 months I was enjoying eating again. All of my intolerances went away between 4 and 10 months. My appetite returned in full force between 10-12 months.

In the beginning I was stuffed on just a couple tablespoons of food. By 6 months I was up to 1/4 - 1/2 cup and at 14 months and beyond I can eat 3/4-1 cup of anything and everything I want, including all those starchy/carb heavy things that made me fat in the first place. And if course there are the slider foods that I can eat an endless amount of. Yes, I still love to eat, so at this point it's my head, not my sleeve that controls what, how much and when I eat. I have to stick with high protein/low carb in order to maintain my loss, which I have done for over two years. And no, I don't eat 3 meals a day, it's more like 6-8 mini meals/snacks a day.

Do you know where and why things went wrong with your band? If it was about poor food choices, grazing, snacking, lack of activity, etc, these things will still be an issue with ANY WLS. It will always come down to your choices when it comes to being successful, not the type of surgery you had. Good luck!

The port had flipped in my stomach. In addition, I was vomiting too often. Thank you for the feedback.

I've got a friend with a lap and who suffers with the vomitting/reflux thing almost daily. Her band actually slipped several years ago resulting in an emergency surgery to remove it. Then she had a second band put in despite the complications and failure to lose even 1/2 of her excess weight. She's just to scared to do sleeve or bypass. Compared to the problems she's had, my sleeve experience has been a piece of cake in terms of long term side effects, ease of eating "normally" and successful weight loss. I've never vomitted once.

Good luck. If you've had successful loss and maintenance with your band, you should be very happy with the sleeve. For me anyways, permanent was just what I needed!

Tmack1, Your question 'Does anyone enjoy eating, are you you able to fit in three meals daily, and are there any foods that you are unable to eat since your surgery? ' Yes, absolutely I enjoy eating. I am much more selective if I'm going to eat something that does not fit my protein, carb and fat requirement I choose the best tasting thing out there so the small portion I have makes my taste buds sing. It's a waste of calories to eat food that does not taste good in small portions.

I wanted the gastric sleeve precisely due to its permanency. Do you want your weight loss to be temporary? I know I don't. I don't miss my old stomach one bit and all I can say is good riddance. I wish I'd done this sooner in life.

Today I enjoy eating far more than I did prior to being sleeved, and I have no food intolerances. Basically, I can eat just about anything without becoming sick or reacting poorly.

However, I must exercise some self-control because I could eat every two hours if I really wanted to. Therefore, I could fit in six or seven meals per day if I was determined to overeat. Eating dense proteins such as chicken, fish and beef helps keep me fuller for a longer period of time. In addition, I avoid slider snacks such as chips, pretzels, crackers and cookies.

enjoy??? haha yes i love food JUST AS MUCH AS BEFORE.... heck maybe even more bc i have somthing to control me and i dont feel as guilty afterwards.

i eat more than 3 meals a day more like 6 small ones... this is only a portion control diet doesnt change your tastebuds or any thing like that and after about a month i still had the same cravings and same hungar pangs as before

granted some people are different give or take...

i still order off a adult menu if the kids doesn't have what i want and split it up or give to hubbie...

still tho my eyes are way bigger than my stomach and i over order WAY TO MUCH if i eat out or even meal prep ...

my meal preps last me two weeks vs one like a normal stomach

I'm almost 8 months out and I have no real issues with any food intolerance. My tastebuds have changed, especially towards heavily processed food (just the smell of the fast food drive thru is awful to me now) but I can eat just about anything. I eat three meals a day, typically 3-4 ounces of food, and two snacks; usually a protein shake in the morning and a glass of non fat fortified milk at night.

I actually enjoy eating more than before. It seems like now I can taste and smell everything better, and I have more fun making up new recipes and trying new healthier alternatives to the foods I loved before. I really enjoy playing around with herbs and spices more than before. I enjoy grocery shopping more now too. I still get a little anxious sometimes when we go out to restaurants for dinner, but I usually check out the menu before we go somewhere so I already know what they serve.
