Default Things still tasting/smelling weird at 9 wks

I got all excited for scallops today, put them in the pan, cooked em just right, took one small bite and.....blech! Had to spit it out. One of our dogs had a nice snack today.

At what point does food become "normal" again? I couldn't drink the Premeir shakes til about a week ago, but normal food?

Almost like being pregnant....some things just smell/taste gross.

Hard to say Pam, 4 years and I still can have days when I'm not thrilled about certain foods, but next time it is OK. Smells can really get me, always had a sensitive nose and now I carry a small jar of vicks for imergencies. Good luck

    Hi Pam,

I can honestly say that even after a little over 16 months out I still have issues with ALLOT of different foods. Some just turn my stomach now and others I just can't seem to get down very well at all. I took my 14 year old son to the mall today for some school shopping and then we went to "Red Robin" a burger place for lunch. I ordered a blue cheese burger and they give you fries and I had nothing to drink as always (can't drink and eat at all). Anyway I cut the burger in half didn't touch the fries and could not even eat half the burger no matter how hard I tried. If I had pushed for that last bite I would have been sick and I am very well aware of my limits. I don't know if we will ever eat all the things we used to love but I will tell you every couple months I find something I used to love that I can finally eat. Take shrimp for instance, it took me a year to be able to eat it and now only 3 or 4 depending on size. Only as of last month can I eat chicken cutlets but they have to be super thin and tender otherwise no way. It really is strange how much we change with our amounts and what we consume and yes sometimes I miss things but wouldn't change it for the world. I hope some day you like scallops again and in time you probably will it just takes some of us longer than others.

Forgot to add but allot of my food restrictions are because of taste and smell, some things just gross me out.

    Define "normal" LOL!

I agree with thenewmetoday and zoey101.

There are times when I can't stomach the SMELL, let alone the TASTE of certain foods and drinks.

Two days ago I attempted to eat an egg with the yolk instead of my usual egg white only. No go, it came back up immediately.

Maybe some day it will change. I just go with the flow. One Day At a Time. I stopped trying to push the river a long time ago.

I think at about 8 months I was able to tolerate most foods. In the beginning smelling certain food turned my stomach and I knew to not try eating them. Eggs were definitely one of those foods. At one year, I eat two scrambled eggs each morning and enjoy them. Coffee sounds good but my stomach has not been able to tolerate it. I have started adding flavored cream and enjoy that without issue. However, I can't afford the extra calories so that isn't really an option daily. It did get much better for me. Just give it time and enjoy the foods you can tolerate. Let the rest wait until you are post op a little longer. You'll know if it is going to agree with you.

it takes some getting used to doesn't it? I have an issue with eggs as well. Cant do it... and I surprised myself at work a couple weeks ago.. I walked into the lounge and saw a cake on the table.. The thought of it, made my stomach turn... but I was looking forward to the plate of roasted veggies on the next table!! weird right?! but yea if the scallops were a no go now, they might be yummy again in a couple weeks. our pallets are changing. (Like when you hate broccoli as a kid, but as an adult you like it)

It's so weird. I wonder why we have this reaction? Maybe it's hormones, like when we're pregnant....

You're right Pam, it's all about hormones. My surgeon did tell me a few months ago that with all my pregnancies being complicated (to say the least) I would probably have those same symptoms after the sleeve, but it would go away at some point, probably before the one year anniversary. My surgeon also said that the research in that area is not really advanced and they don't know much right now. Anyway, for me the worth has been being nauseous for months. I do suspect that it's also a combination of the side effect from the PPI (lansoprazole) because as soon as I cut the dosage in half two months ago, my nausea was almost gone...could be also a coincidence, who knows. So far any smell or food could trigger the nausea, depending on the day and time. During the first two months post-op I could barely cook and used the pressure cooker a lot to avoid any smell..plus it's healthier (I couldn't pa, fry anything for a long time). Cruciferous veggies have been a big no no since day one, but also a few (French) smelly cheese that I used to love, can't stand it any more. I couldn't have scallops at month 3, but was fine at month 5. Don't worry, it will take time but things will go back to normal at some point! take care!
