Default Wasn't expecting that! Completely parched while I eat.

    Hello friends!

I'm just over 8 weeks out. Since my pre-op diet (started a month before surgery) - I'm down 40#'s! I (fortunately or unfortunately) can carry a lot of weight without many noticing, so I'm just starting to see some big changes (clothes fitting completely differently, or in some cases, not at all). All of this keeps me very motivated. I love that I can only eat a small amount and hit my wall of satiety. I do well on eating protein first (and most days, that's all I'm able to eat).
My struggle: I'm finding it almost impossible not to drink while I eat! I NEVER drank while I ate prior to surgery, so this is not something I thought I would struggle with. Even moist food just doesn't want to go down past my throat. It isn't that it gets stuck part way down. it's that I can't get it down at all without a sip of water. Since I know this is one of the big "no-no's" for those of us who wish to lose and maintain for life: what do I do?? Has anyone experienced this change?

I really wouldn't stress over it. If you need a sip to get it down, take a sip. I drink with meals if I'm thirsty. Actually, I never really think about it. It isn't a rule for me. If I want to drink, I drink. In fact, I eat and drink what I want when I want and it seems to works just fine for me. Of course, we're all different, but don't hurt yourself trying to stick to some silly rule.

I think it's harder for me to swallow food now, so I take a sip if I need it. I try to stay away from liquids during my meals like the rules say to, but I've gotten to where I'll take a drink here-and-there if needed. My advice? If you need a drink, take one. If you don't need a drink, don't take one. If I drink too much while eating I'll get diarrhea. So I stick to minimum sips.

I wonder why they even have that as a rule. I drink water with my meals, always. The only thing I notice is I get full faster when I drink with meals. So i'm just aware that I need to come back in an hour and finish that Chicken breast that I could only eat half of since I was drinking water with it. Sometimes I do get air and need to pat my stomach to burp it out and it can make me feel like I need to puke, but if I eat and drink slowly and take a break before the full feeling hits and come back 30 mins later I can finish the meal with no issues.

But its kind of knowing your body and learning what works best for you. Maybe smaller bites?

I was also having that problem and I decided that if I needed a sip, instead of drinking something, I would eat a piece of ice. Not enough to make you full but helps to moisten the food.

That's actually very clever! That would slow down the eating process which I try to be very mindful of (some times with success, sometimes, not so much). It's still liquid so it doesn't really change the problem of drinking while eating, but I do like that it will slow me down. Thanks!
