Default Bad dinner night eating fish and broccoli

Need advice from seasoned sleevers on this one: I am about 6 1/2 weeks post op and was moved to start solids. So I tried fish, a small small amount of baked tilapia and about 4 broccoli florets that were steamed. I chewed and chewed . After my last bite I knew I was in trouble! Instant stuck pain feeling! It was so painful I thought I might need medical help. I walked around the house in pain for almost 20 minutes. I had to take a small sip of water because it felt stuck in my esophagus although I know we are not supposed to eat and drink. I could literally feel everything! Please tell me this will get better. I will be staying away from fish and brocolli for a while ... Trust me. I thought baked fish was a good starter protein. I wonder what I did wrong!

I eat too fast and throw up everything I eat so I'm trying to learn how to eat and chew slower .

I wonder if it was the broccoli, not the fish. My surgeon says no broccoli, leafy veggies, or ones with hulls (peas, corn, etc.) for at least 12 weeks post-op. Hope you are feeling better today!

I bet it was the broccoli. I can only eat about 4 small pieces now, and I am a year and a half out. I ate a lot of fish, shrimp and crab early on. I would try the fish again without the broccoli, I bet you have better luck. Everyone reacts differently to everything. I couldn't eat scrambled eggs, only boiled then pureed with mayo and a touch of mustard... It was a long time before I could eat them comfortably and still really do not enjoy them. Best of luck, it is often a hit or miss with foods. I really did not eat a bunch of vegetables for the first six months. I could not eat enough protein to justify it....

    Keep on trying...

Fish is good, broccoli has to much fiber for someone at this stage.

I agree with all the other posters. At 10 months I still get that stuck feeling if I try a new vegetable or fruit. I had a couple fresh strawberries the other day and suffered with that stuck feeling, but it was worth it. Yumm

It's possible that it was just too soon for both or that it was just too much. Unfortunately at the beginning there is so much trial and error. When trying new things, just a bite or 2 and at home to see how it goes. The attempt to eat normally sometimes caused me to overdo it. Still does and I am 4 years out June 13. Best wishes to you! I remember my husband rolling on the bed in pain. I think it happens to most of us at some point.

I've found that it's all trial and error.
I hope you're feeling better now!

broccoli was the culprit I'm sure - I was able to tolerate a bit of broiled founder after 6-7 weeks I think - that is very moist - didn't even attempt veggies like that for quite a long time.
