Question Is it normal to not have to go through a pre op diet before your surgery???

Hi guys, pretty new to the site, but have been reading up in the forum whilst researching about the surgery

So my patient care manager told me i don't need to go on a pre op diet, my bmi is 35 and i weigh 85-86kgs, my height is 5'3approx , is that normal to not have gone through the pre op diet? I did double and tripple check with them but they said no need for me, why do you need to have the pre op diet and how come certain people don't have to?

Surgery is in 4 days!!!Time sure flies!

    No pre op diet.

I see you're in the UK. Most of us who post on this forum are in the US, so the process might work differently abroad.

Generally speaking, some surgeons here in the US require pre-op diets and some do not. In addition, here in the US, many people's surgeries are financed by private insurance companies that require supervised pre-op medical diets before the surgery will be paid in full.

Personally, my surgeon required a two-week pre-op diet of protein shakes, soups and jello. The point of this diet was to deplete my glycogen stores and shrink my liver so it would be out of the way during the surgery.

Thank you RehabNurse for the info, i understand better now , I think it's the same in UK then, coz some require you to go on it and some don't, depends on the individual and the surgeon i guess, i will mention the no pre op diet requested of me, to the surgeon though..on the day of my surgery, just to reconfirm with him. Congrats on your weight loss! Such an amazing achievement, can't wait for mine, have struggled with weight for so long, hope the sleeve will help me control my portions and help me achieve a healthy lifestyle, i am going to try my absolute best!!!

    No pre op diet.

I had no pre-op diet and it was done here in the US thru Kaiser Hospital. It all depends on the surgeon and it all depends on how big you are to begin with. My liver is fine, there is no getting it out of the way.

I will be having the surgery at the end of this month and I was told to be on a liquid diet for two weeks prior. The reason for the liquid diet is to shrink the liver so when they are performing the surgery endoscopically, it will be easier to access the stomach.
