Default Is it possible to lose 180 lbs with the sleeve?

Hi I'm Patty . I'm 52 ,I have hypothyroidism. I'm married and have raised three kids and now I foster care three kids.im 5'1 weigh 295. I love sweets. I need to lose about 180 lbs.Is it possible to lose that much with the sleeve. I'm thinking about going to Mexico to have it done.ive never flown and its a eight hour flight there I'm worried about that as well.im also afraid it won't help me lose weight that maybe I'll just be wasting that money. That maybe I should wait and continue saving for gastric bypass. thx in advance Patty

    Hi Patty,
    The sleeve works wonders,
however the sweets thing has to be put away with the kid side of thinking,
your decision to sleeve is an adult one and you are in full control of your journey.
On this journey you teach yourself what is good for you and what is not,
consider the sleeve a tool, not a cure.
As you get older your body will need different levels of nutrition,
as I have researched the sleeve I found that the sleeve allows for these changes.
    I do hope this helps.

    Hi Patty52,

I'm a mother of 2 with hypothyroidism. I currently weigh 299lbs and preparing for the Gastric Sleeve on 4/28. I was cleared today by my primary care physician, approved last month by my insurance company and started this week on my pre-op diet.

As long as your level are regulated you should do exceptionally well with surgery. I'm confident that I will loose at least 155lbs that I'm looking to loose partly because of my eating habit. I've been able to loose 40lbs on my own cutting out lots of foods and cutting down on my portions. The surgery is going to help me "not go back to over eating" to reach my goal.

From one hypothyroidism candidate to another while I find it impossible sometimes to loose weight it really is all in my head. I can do anything I set my mind too no matter how difficult. Once you change your thinking to the "I CAN DO" and limit those bad foods the weight will creep right off.

I can't wait to be sleeved next month to begin seeing the new me! Good luck and be encouraged!

Yes, I have lost 180 lbs with the sleeve and continue to lose. My highest weight prior to being sleeved was 457 lbs. Bottom line: stay way from old habits and work with your medical team. Having surgery will NOT prevent you from eating or loving sweets, you will still need to take an active role in your success. Typically those who embrace a lifestyle change will often see greater success than those who cling to or return to old habits.

I used to eat large quantities of cheese fries, and diet dr. Pepper in the range of 10-12 twenty ounce bottles per day. My new lifestyle is free of those items and I feel so much better. Sure, it was hard work but I don't miss those days.

Yes there are many on here that have followed the course and lost more than 180. I flew solo from Toronto Ontario Canada to San Diego and on to Mx and f returned home solo ...oops forget to mention that I was 70 at that time. I am a few weeks from 3 years post op and it has changed my life...mainly.....I can keep it off.....that is the miracle of the sleeve. Good luck to you.

I can't testify to losing 180 lbs, but, I have lost 149.5 lbs in 17 months and I am still losing. Lost 1.8 lbs this week. I started at 291, I am 5' tall. I was 59 when I had this surgery. I also was addicted to sweets. Haven't had any 17 months. No desserts, candy, ice cream, etc., not even a bite. Don't even have a taste for them any longer. I do eat a SF fudge pop after supper every night and SF pudding after lunch everyday. I use sweeteners in my coffee and hot tea. The only advice I could possibly give you is,stay on plan and don't slip back to old habits. As far as Mexico, I can't testify to that. I had mine done in Mobile, AL.

Hi Patty! I can only speak from personal experience. I was 56 when I had the surgery. I started at 350 and am now 193--so a loss, so far, of 157 lbs. I will be honest and admit that I do not exercise except for playing with my dogs and walking the recycles out to the road (about 300') 1Xwk and doing that same walk to get the mail 5Xwk. I am still losing--about 5-10 lbs/mo. This is without obsessing about food or the scale. I still eat protein first. Some days I eat more, some days less. I still get my fluids in via teas, coffees and milk. So yes it is possible.

Yes. There is a man who posts here who I believe lost over 260 pounds.
He sounds like a person from the "Wizard of Oz" and yes, he has a heart.

Patty, have you called your insurance company? I think a LOT of them will cover surgery maybe with a little work you can have them pay for it.
On a post today I read that there is an advocate who will work on your behalf if your Dr.'s office has done everything possible and still gets a denial.
    Good luck!
