Does anyone know why, when a Bypass is performed, they leave the detached stomach inside, but with the Sleeve, the detached stomach is removed?? I don't understand why? The stomach has the small intestine attached but this is bypassed so what's the purpose? And are there different sizes that can be made with the Sleeve? Can they make the Sleeve a little larger or are they all one size?

According to my doc there is not a choice on sleeve size. The two surgeries are very different in all aspects. I am not sure why they leave the stomach in the bypass operation but I know that with my sleeve, I keep some of my stomach and the other part of the intestinal track are left intact. When I was considering my surgery options I felt like the way you lose and the process for the bypass was just too unnatural and I felt like if absorption issues might become a problem later in life and I felt that the sleeve would avoid that.

yes, thats exactly why i have chosen the sleeve. I was just wondering why one is removed and the in the other surgery, it stays. weird.

The part of the stomach that is left in with RNY still functions, (retains it's blood supply and continues to make some acid and hormones). It is at an increased risk of forming ulcers due to caffeine consumption, smoking and taking NSAIDS and some other medications

Also, the RnY can be reattached when you reach your goal weight. I believe that is why so many bypass patient re-gain their weight down the road if they don't change their lifestyle.
