    Default Pre-op Diet

    Hello,

I was wondering if you guys had any trouble with your pre-op diet before the surgery. Since my BMI is larger than 40, I have to follow a protein diet for three weeks. But I started as soon as I could, since it couldn't do my wrong. I am on day 11 right now and I don't really feel I lost a lot of weight. Maybe it is just me thinking it, but I am kinda worried that I am eating something wrong. When I get up in the morning I do not have that empty feeling in my stomach.

My protein diet consists of powder food pretty much. Usually it is pancakes, omelettes, soup or smoothie. I have to eat 5 a day, but I only eat about 4 since I always feel full from taking a multivitamin pill (which I think does not give me a hungry feeling).
The only thing I can eat besides my protein diet, is vegetables (cooked, raw, or steamed). Lately I eat a lot of raw carrots and carrot juice. What kinda vegetables do you recommend. I pretty much eat everything.

Might want to skip the pancakes and eggs, my pre-op diet was a liquid only. Primarily three protein shakes with water, skim milk or unsweetened almond milk.

I would cut back on carbs, vary you veggies and drink lots of water you may not lose any weight. I am on a hi protein diet and I have not lost anything but I am adjusting my body to all the protein we have to eat.

My pre-op diet was 5 protein meal replacements - protein shakes or protein bars. I usually drank 3 shakes so I could try different flavors to decide which ones I wanted post-op. The protein bars I ate were Pure Protein or bars from Bariatric sites. One meal a day could be 5 ounces lean meat and 2 cups non- starchy vegetables. The reason you eat high protein is to shrink your liver. Some surgeons are very restrictive with the pre-op diet to break our old eating habits. And teach us to follow an eating plan.

Try to focus on protein including protein shakes. Drink plenty of water - target 64 ounces of fluid with most of it water. After surgery you won't be able to drink anything while eating or 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after. You will be eating very slow. These are all things that I suggest you practice. That will make things easier when you get to have soft foods after surgery.

Remember that this is a lifetime journey with a new tool to help you.

    Good luck - Bonnie

The protein diet brand is something my doctor prescribed to reduce the liver. So instead of eating 3580 calories a day to maintain my weight, I am eating less than 500. The pancakes and eggs are full powder foods. I have to mix the powder in 100ml of water. So it doesnt even taste like pancakes or eggs. Haha. Maybe it is just all in my head. If i eat 3000 calories less than I am used to, i have to be losing some, right? My meals are about 10 grams of carbs a day.

I am craving so bad for a piece of fruit, but cant have none

Don't worry about losing weight on the pre-op diet. That's not what it's about. The whole reason for the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver to make surgery easier. You will be losing weight soon enough.

My whole per diet was just protein and liquid. I never counted calories just bake everything or grill it. Just don't worry about eating carbs and balanced diet to lose weight this ore surgery thing is like Jim said its to shrink the liver, and about 3-5 days before surgery you are gonna have to drink just straight liquid anyway. And it has nothing to do with calories. Watch YouTube surgery on gastric sleeve and you will understand better why the liver needs to be smaller, it covers the stomach and they can't see it to do surgery.

Carrots are very high in sugars. Try switching to broccoli and/or cauliflower

    Hi Jurgen!

We share the same surgery date. I do not feel like I am losing much on my preop diet either, but trying to focus on staying on course to shrink my liver. My diet is 5-6 protein shakes and clear liquids a day. See you next week on ther losers bench!

    Hello Vicky,

Are you getting nervous? I am! First surgery ever!
After my GRE exam tomorrow, I have to go to Bruges for my weigh-in. So I will probably post of the pre-op diet had any effect.

Im glad I don't have a scale that supports my weight or I would weigh myself all the time.

    Hi Jurgen!

I think I am a little nervous, but I am really excited! Can't wait until next Thursday! I know the first few days will be a butt kicker, but if I can get through those days I know I will be okay.

I have the habit of weighing everyday. It's an addiction. lol

Good luck on your test and weigh in.

Good luck and best wishes you come through will flying colors. Actually it is a wide smilely face on your stomache from bruises...lol if you start crying after surgery it's normal, it happened to me. Everytime I tried to say something I started crying....lol I thought I was going into the looney bin next. But it's from your body adjusting to one of its parts being gone. So basically a post partim thing. But good luck sweetie! Keep us up to date how you are doing.
