I'm new!

Hi my name is Michèle I'm new and need to know as much as I can before having Gastric Sleeve Surgery. What should I bring to hospital? How long will I be in hospital? What questions do I need to ask my surgeon? I'm nervous about it. Will my hubby or daughter be able to stay with me at the hospital? Will I have my own hospital room?

It all depends on the doctor, hospital and your insurance. I was scheduled for 3 days but had a hernia fixed and some b/p issues that kept me for 5. I had a private room in a critical care unit with excellent nurses and aides, I think if I had wanted my hubby to stay they would have let him. Honestly other than maybe a pair of pj bottoms and lip balm the hospital provided me with all toiletries I needed but I did develop a super sensitive nose right after surgery and the smell of everything made me want to hurl. I've heard of people in the states having it done as outpatient and go home same day, I'm a wimp an wouldn't have wanted to do that. I did have a catheter and they put it in while I was out and I was happy not to have to get up every few hours to pee with all the extra fluids you get thru the IV. But the 2nd night I got the runs from drinking the stuff for the swallow test and of course it hit me in the middle of the night. It's all but a distant memory now.

Many of your questions will be answered by your surgeon. I did read a great book that I got on Amazon. The book is "Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny" by Dr. Nick Nicholson. It covers many of the things you need to know and more that you wouldn't think of asking. Small book but full of great information.

Each clinic is different. All of these questions will be answered by whoever is doing the procedure. We really can't shed much light on their routines. I was out patient. And I'm glad I was. In and out in half a day. No problems. And much more comfortable staying at my grandparents place than getting screwed with at the hospital. Best of luck.
