Question Swallowing tablets - how many days post op

    Hi,

I had surgery on 22nd April '14 and was sent home from hospital with medication in syrup form and dissolvable pills.

The problem is they make me feel sick every time I take them as they taste so horrid! How long do you have to leave it before you can swallow tablets whole? I have the same medication in tablet form and would love to start taking them. I am able to swallow enough water to get the tablets down.

    Would welcome your advice.

    Jess
    Xx

I wasn't given the liquid forms of pain meds, instead I had to cut the up into thirds a few days later I switched to halves. I was also on Reglan for 30 days and after a few weeks I was able to take it whole.

Call your physician and double check because I was sent home with pills. I would cut them in half until about two weeks after surgery and then I was able to swallow one pill, but had to wait 20 minutes or so before taking my next medication. It doesn't last forever. I'm able to take mine together now. I just have to take my time or my pouch will overfill. Best of luck! You're going to love this new journey!

I crushed mine from the first day home and took them with applesause. It didnt taste any better but helped because I couldnt drink enough water to get them down. Two weeks out I was able to swallow them whole. Check with your dr about crushing meds though because you cant do it with time released and a few other types.

I was able to take pills the day I got home from the hospital. I had to take them one at a time every 15 minutes. After 2 months I could take them with no restrictions.

My dr recommended children's liquid Tylenol for any headaches, etc. Then after 2 weeks I could take pills.

I was given some of my meds in the hospital via tablet and I have been taking tablets since. If they are too big, ask your doctor for an alternative.

it was about six weeks out for me before I could go back to tablets. Capsules were expressly forbidden and I had to take some heart medication daily that for the first six weeks I had to open up and mix with yogurt of applesauce. The hard tablets were ok if they were tiny, but nothing as large as an aspirin.

My doctor told me 3 months. Even though they go down..... does not mean that they are being absorbed properly. He suggested to keep crushing and allow the stomach to heal completely.

I took small tablets after the first week or so, larger pills after the first month.
