Congrats on finally getting your approval! You could ask your doctor for valium, but not sure if it will be given! When you get to the hospital, it's the normal paperwork, get you into pre-op where your nurse will assess you. You'll get your IV, and sometimes they do give you something to relax (some happy juice) in your IV...then you're off to surgery! Most likely you will do all your blood work etc a few days before. Best of luck to you in your journey!

Congrats on this next step in your journey. I'm sorry that you haven't had full support in your circle, but keep your eyes on the prize. This is your journey, not theirs. They may or may not get on board after your surgery, hopefully they will.

When you go to the hospital they'll get you into your gown and get your iv started. You may wait awhile before being taken to preop. Once there you will meet with the anesthesiologist and most likely the surgeon before your surgery. Tell the anesthesiologist that you've got anxiety, that's one of the reasons they're there. They will usually ask you if you want something to help you relax, just say yes. You'll be transported into the OR and transfer onto the table there. The last thing I remember is them stretching out the arm that had the IV in it and then I woke up in recovery a while later. They kept me out longer than they normally would because I have a sensitivity to most iv pain meds and they wanted to get some decent pain relief in me before I woke up. Then they'll take you to your room (I only half remember this) and you'll start your recovery phase.

    Good luck!

I don't remember coming out of pre-op at all, I had a complicated case and was out considerably longer than expected.

I remember going in to the OR, getting on the table, and as soon as they were strapping my arms down I was out! They did offer if I needed something for my nerves, but I declined.

I asked in advance if it would be possible to get Adavan (a little blue pill that helps with anxiety). I have done this for the last 4 surgeries I have had. On the day I was going to go into surgery I reminded them and they gave it to me right away. For the next few hours while I waited for my turn I was very relaxed and I believe that it helped with my recovery as well. One gentleman that was waiting for his surgery got some type of liquid put into his I.V. drip and within seconds he was super relaxed. Made for a very interesting conversation...lol. All the best!

I think they put something in my IV because I don't remember getting wheeled out of the triage room! When I woke up in my hospital room my husband was there at the end of my bed! It was great!
