    Default Weight Gain after surgery?

    Hello. New Poster here.

I had my VGS surgery on 12/23. Except for woosiness due to anthestia, everything went fine. I started out at 276.6 before the 3-day pre-op diet and weighted 271.4 the morning of my surgery. One week later, I weighed in at 263.8. However, over the last 2 days, I've gone up to 265.

I'm still on a full liquid diet. I started drinking watered down soups last Friday and I'm still doing so. And it's not like I can 'cheat'. The only thing I can think of is possible water weight gain. Which, given the sodium in soups, I guess is possible.

But there is a part of me that is feeling so HOPELESS. I can't seem to get the thought out of my head that this won' work either - that it won't stick - just like every diet program I've ever tried. That I just won't lose the weight.

I see the doctor tomorrow. And of course I'm going to talk about this, but has anyone else ever dealth with this? And do you ever have the fear that this won't work either?

Hi there! I know what you mean. I gained alittle then stopped losing for 4 weeks, 4 weeks! Those negative thoughts started creaping in. I started adding up my calories and knew that i was way under what i needed to maintain. I talked with my husband, who had the lapband done a week before my sleeve. I found out he was experiencing the same as well. The reasonable thought we came up with was first, the surgery was a big shock to my system and my body said Holy Crap shes starving us so it started holding on to whatever i fed us and my body needed to heal and that takes time. Second, i think your right about the sodium and water weight and third, most important, it will work because drastic times means drastic measures. I can tell you after 4 weeks i started loosing weight and i am 50lbs down now, half way to my goal! Try to keep the negative thoughts at bay, its hard but you can do it! I have total faith in you and this tool we have been given. I have had some crappy days but NOTHING has made me wish i hadnt done it. :-)

Thanks! I needed to hear that.

So, it looks like you had surgery a month before I did. For 4 weeks nothing and then 'woosh' and you lost what? 20 pounds or more in the last two weeks? Wow!

You bet! After the initial weight loss after surgery your body will say whoo and need time to adjust to the drastic decrease in calorie intake. I think we all get a little depressed and have doubt. The small weight gain is just water weight and will go away soon and the scale will start to go down again soon. Relax and don't worry you will lose the weight. Granted as time goes on you will have to work at it to make good food choices and start a good exercise plan, but you can do it and you will. Best Wishes for a happy and healthy NEW YEAR!

Highest weight 440 lbs. lowest weight 9.5 lbs at birth
    Date of surgery weight 340

Weight on birthday 3/24/48 Goal 285 would be nice.

    That's great!

I have another question. I'm not having any problem drinking fluids and can easily get an 8 oz shake down within an hour. Granted, it's a Costco Premier Protien which isn't as thick as the Baratric shake mix I was given (which is just way too foamy for me). Is that a bad thing? I mean, am I doing something wrong in order to drink that much? I was reading some other threads and there are people who are struggling to get 4 oz in an hour . . .

I had no problem drinking an 8 ounce shake in an hour, less even. I wouldnt worry. If it was too much your stomach would balk.

I was sleeved on Dec 17, 2013, and I have also been drinking the premier protein shakes....I can easily get it down in an hour or less....My Doc told me that liquids kinda go straight thru...unlike foods that have to be digested....I would not worry.. Sounds like you are doing fine!

I can drink an 8 oz shake in about 30 minutes depending on how thick it is. Like the poster above said, liquids slide right through.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to be better.
