During my pre-op plastic surgery consult yesterday, I learned an interesting bit of trivia:
I was required to sign a document recognizing the "scarring risks" if I drank a whey-based or cassein-based protein shake (i.e. 99% of all commercially available shakes) for six weeks following surgery.
According to the paperwork, plastic surgery cosmetic stitches are very numerous and fine. Digesting whey or cassein protein causes thickening and darkening of skin surrounding cosmetic stitches, resulting in ugly brown keloid scarring. Additionally, these scars are very, very thick and unlikely to fade with time.
I've been drinking protein shakes for years, even prior to sleeving (I lift weights) and was surprised to learn this.
