Default Doctor says soft foods for 3 MONTHS???????????????

A lady I met at PATS and I became friends. She had a different surgeon. I went last week for a 3 week check up and was told 2 more weeks of soft foods. She saw her surgeon today and he told her soft foods for 3 months to be sure that there are no leaks. Has anyone ever heard of this before!?????? I have not.

    Thanks!

And I thought my surgeon was conservative! Did she have a band to sleeve conversion, or some other structural stomach issue? That's one good reason that I can think of to be ultra-conservative about challenging the sleeve with solid food.

Some doctors (not just surgeons) are ridiculously cautious because they want to avoid being sued if a patient has a bad outcome, particularly from non-compliance. My hubs is in medical malpractice insurance, and he sees cases where docs get sued for bad outcomes, even if the patient brought it on themselves by being non-compliant.

I don't think requiring a person to stay on a soft diet for three months is unreasonable. Though I do hope that my doctor isn't of that opinion. The thought of a soft diet brings back horrible memories of watching my dad drink blenderized spaghetti after having ulcer surgery. UGH!

Well, my doc had me on puree for a month, and soft foods for three. Soft, not puree. So I can eat almost everything, just nothing particularly crunchy or those big dry meats. To be honest, I have tried things outside of the req's but found I couldn't handle most of those things anyway. They told me a lot of their recommendations come from listening to the experiences of their patients. For the puree and soft foods their rec's are more about preparing patients for what they'll be able to tolerate than about leaks. most of the danger of leaks comes in the first two-three weeks according to my doc. Other than that, the biggest worry from my doc is carbonation and vitamin/protein intake. Carbonation really can damage the little baby stomach, and not getting your vits/protein can cause long-term issues.

Again, all that came from MY doc. I can't say this enough. You should really listen to your own doc. If you follow yours and something goes awry your doc will know how to fix it. If you follow my doc's rec's your doc won't know what's causing an issue.

What is the 'carbonation' and how does one avoid it?

uhh, are you for real? carbonation means anything carbonated... like any form of pop or alcohol or fizzy drink of any kind. even tonic water should be avoided,
