Warning..my friend Roxanne in this forum just had surgery from Dr. Aceves and she died! Just two weeks ago. Please reconsider going thru with this surgery. There are better ways. This is way too risky! Don't be fooled. This surgery is not safe. Trust me. You have all been warned.

maybe you should give a little more information other than your friend died! Its tragic but was is solely from this surgery? Did your friend have other health issues that contributed? If you have any type of surgery there is a risk of death. Everyone who has this surgery does so because they are overweight and being overweight means you have or are at risk to have a number of health issues that lead to death. Anyone who is considering this surgery, please check with your doctor first, make sure you are healthy enough to have surgery, not just this one but any surgery.

Jay, I'm sorry you have lost your friend, and I'm sorry your friend has lost her life. It is a serious business not to be taken lightly and I for one decided the risk was worth it when I decided to undergo the operation.

Jay, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend and I appreciate that you want people to be informed about the risks. Your statement that the surgery isn't safe is an understandable overstatement given your experience. Most people on here however have had not had serious complications and death rates are very small. In my mind it was similar to making the choice to travel by car - we know that people die in car crashes and the only way to be 100% sure not to die in a car crash is never to get into a car. But for the most part it is safe, and the benefits most people experience far outweigh the very small risks.

Nothing can take away the terrible tragedy of any death, but at the same time the potential benefits are so huge that for me it was absolutely worth the risk.

Once again, I'm so sorry your friend died as a result of surgery. I hope you can find peace, and remember that she died in pursuit of good health.

Jay, can you please explain in detail what happened? I have been very thorough in preparing for surgery. I've done tests, given blood, met with Dr s, made n kept appointments, researched hours (maybe days) on end, almost competed the pre op diet for 2 grueling weeks, and so on. I have tried to be educated in everything that I have done because I feel knowledge is KEY!!! I saw your original post that said your friend died from this surgery and warning us to not do it. Although I appreciate your warning, it's not fair to us to not give us more details about what happened please. Did your friend have other health issues? Please explain in depth. I am sorry for your loss but posting things like this is a terrible way to make your point! I have a great friend who had surgery with Dr Aceves and has done just fine since surgery over a year ago so there are always two sides to things.EVERY surgery has risks no matter who preforms it and I feel posting something like you have here is a terrible thing I am sure you have just helped a few people decided they will just stay over weight because they now have given up so I hope that makes you happy they will continue to stuffer because you think its ok to tell us we are going to DIE. I had surgery 2 years ago and I havent died and that rings true for hundreds of thousands of people who have had and are having this surgery!

If you would give more details it would make your post a little more credible. first of all we don't know who your friend was, or what kind of complications she had. Surgery is not to be taken lightly by anyone but most of the people on here are adult with serious weight problems. If you had done your homework you would know that a lot of people on this sight have other problems that could kill them if they did not have this surgery. We all know there are other ways to lose weight. We have already tried most of them. Maybe you should check out the success rate of this surgery before you come on here and try to scare everyone. We all know the risk we are taking. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you are just lashing out because of the pain you are feeling for the loss of your friend. Most of the people on here are so nice and would love to know what happened instead of just being "warned". I hope you can find it in yourself to post what happened.

I am sorry for your loss. For those of you preparing for surgery I am sorry for you as we'll because I know this post is scaring you.
Please remember that this is a risk you have read about in the past and is not new. Think about why you are doing this. Now I am not pushing you to go forward but this is a very rare occurrence. And, there are no details behind how it happened. Most infections and leaks are not caused by dr's negligence but our own. Now I do not know if this is this case and without details I am just sayin this because it is unfair for those of you with upcoming surgeries to just read a scary message like this. All I can say is, keep doing your homework. Do what feels right and follow your surgeons instructions, they are there for a reason. At 30 I am living for the first time in my life. This surgury did this for me. I feel beautiful for the first time at 30.

It is disturbing for all of us who are anticipating this surgery. It is similar to telling a pregnant women that you knew someone who either lost their baby, or they almost died having a baby! This is not an appropriate forum for this information. The person who posted this has probably made a lot of people anxious and scared. Before my daughter had gastric bypass, I knew of a coworker's husband who died during surgery. I cried when my daughter told me she was having the surgery. I then got educated on the issue. The person who passed away had comorbidities, and unfortunate complications. You have to educate yourself and find a really good surgeon that you can trust. There is always a risk of complications during surgery, but they are rare, and usually there are other reasons for the problems, i.e. other pre-existing conditions.

I am sorry for your loss truly, but please be careful what you write because you are upsetting people with your posting. This surgery has helped a lot of people obtain a better quality of life; we all know the possible complications of any surgery.

Try not to let this post make you so upset. I am annoyed that someone could be this thoughtless; I am sorry for the loss, but the way this person posted was unnecessarily scary. There is a better way to post this - with more sensitivity and thought put into the words used to convey the message to be careful and knowledgeable before making the very big decision to do any surgery.
