Default considering the gastric sleeve and have questions

My doctor (an OBGyn who does not do bypass surgeries) has been suggesting that I explore having the gastric sleeve proceedure for a year. I am almost 100lbs over weight. I am in good health otherwise. I am wondering about the rapid weightloss and hanging, unattractive skin. (I am 47 years old)

Hi LantanaLady, welcome, from another Floridian! I take it you are in Lantana, FL?

Well, skin issues can be dealt with and are much less of a setback in life as being obese. And its an aesthetic issue, not so much a life-threatening health issue. My opinion, and you should get many - go for it, get a gastric sleeve, and if you have skin issues later, you can address them. Hopefully your significant other will stand by your side regardless if you do or not and you wont feel so uncomfortable if it does happen.
Anyway thats my two cents. I am looking forward to reading the other replies.

I agree with MediaHound. I wouldn't trade in my tiny amount of flabby, wrinkly skin that my body has now after 145lbs for all the fat rolls and joint pain I had pre-op! ! !

I look amazing in clothes and at the end of the day, the only other person that sees me naked is my husband so the wrinkly skin, flabbiness (because I don't work out), and the baby fat roll that is on my lower abdomen isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of all things considered. I will be having a tummy tuck, and boob job after we conceive our next child. I'm only 5'2", started at 270, now weigh 125lbs. In a size 2, what's a little wrinkly skin? ??

Hi Lantalady, I was just sleeved. I´m still down in Mexico but going home tommorrow to CT. I can´t wait I miss my family.
I came to Mexico to get my sleeve and do a revision surgery. I was formally a 10 yr. bandster and I had a lot of issues with the band. The usual issues that most folks have vomitting, acid reflux, mild slippage, liquid coming out of my nose, etc. After much research I converted to the slevve after I found out it was a much better surgery than the band. I also spoke with many bandster convertor´s and they told me it was the best thing they ever did.
I remained skinny for 10 yrs. at a horrible price. Finally someone shed light on me and told me of the sleeve.
At about a yr. postop you´ll lose most of your weight. It may still come off in the second year albeit slowly. However most will happen in the first yr. After the first year is when most folks do a cosmetic makeover. Meaning plastic surgery to tidy up hanging skin. I´ve been in Mexico for 10 days and in that time have met many foreign tourist who had bariatric surgeries done in the States and in Canada on their insurance plans and came down to Mexico to get good deals on plastic surgery. See the new Cosmetic Makeover thread started today. For the most part a tummy tuck is usually a must. Most bariatric patients go in for that because after weightloss you´ll have a hanging apron for skin. Also a lot of ladies will do a breast lift.
Some will go in for a full makeover and others will do what´s drastically needed the choice is yours. Anyhow welcome to the group and look around at the threads. You´ll learn a lot here.

    G'day LantanaLady,

not everyone ends up with lots of extra skin and I have to agree with the comments above. Extra skin can be dealt with (covered up or removed) but it doesn't threaten our health and lifestyle. Welcome to the site.

    cheers

It really all depends on the elasticity of the skin. This too depends on many factors, from genetic to whether you smoke or not, as well as how much exercise you take that helps to tone you up.

I have terrible stretch marks from 3 pregnancies and abdominal scars from 3 Caesarean sections so I cannot wait to be able to have a tummy tuck. I will also get my under arms sorted too.

To have your body in the shape where you CAN do something about it is a blessing of having this surgery not a negative! My sleeve is the beginning of a work in progress and I am seriously looking forward to the end result!
