I'm 3days post-op and just can't get the protein in. If I don't get enough what does it mean?
I've tried making different shakes and flavors but no luck. Any advice?????
I am going through the same thing. I hope there is some advice to help. I take three bites of protein shake and it hurts and feels like I am regurgitating. How in the world am I supposed to get the protein in? My surgery was on Wednesday the 22nd. I can keep fluids down, but protien has been hell to keep down. Any suggestions for us new sleevers?
Maybe you should look for and get those protein shots that come in the vial. very little clear liquid with tons of protein. Also, i heard there is protein candy you can suck on but i havent found it yet.
what my friend ws told was just to try to get in fluids to keep from dehydrating until the swelling in the tummy goes down, a few days wont hurt, then try it again. if you cant get down anything then see your dr right away.
Now for the do what I say and not what I do part. I had no trouble getting things down, for the most part, just tiny sips of course. but everything protein made me gag and I didnt want to be pulling on my tummy so after 3 days I stopped trying to drink them and felt so much better. then i worried about not getting in enough protein so I started eating. I would get about a dimes size piece of chicken and take bites of it and chew it til it had no substance left and then sipped water with it. I basically made my own protein drink. it still wasnt enough of course but I felt a lot better after I did that.
that doesnt help if you cant swallow but it was my experience. IM sure there are better ways to manage but it was spur of the moment decision and it was there so....
oh, what does it mean? short term you will be fine, but very short, long term (a week) it will stall your weight loss ( longer) and cause you to lose some hair and cause muscle loss. welcome to our world!

@Cindy ... do you know the name of those protien shots? I'm looking for some too, as I don't like the shakes.

theres more than one kind.. here is one Smoothie D's — Sunkist Protein Shot 42g, Fruit Punch
I've had the protein shots and I think they're pretty horrible. Everyone has such individual tastes. I also read (who knows if it is true) may not be true whey protein.
What have you tried so far? I haven't attempted to choke down a homemade shake because I can already tell by the scent and texture that it's going to be a problem. I LOVE EAS low carb ready to go in chocolate and strawberry. I also LOVE the Premier ready to go at Costco. I can manage the Isopure 40 gram fruit drinks.
For me, it needs to be really cold and ready made and really well mixed or I cannot do it. My surgery is tomorrow morning, so maybe this will change as I hear tastes change for many.
My best suggestion? Go to vitamin shoppe where they have individuals and buy several to try. Also you might want to check out a website called The World According to Eggface. LOTS of good suggestions there. Good luck!
Okay, I'm confused now about this protein thing.
I had my surgery on thursday and was told just clear liquids, ie broth, jello. popsicles, juice, propel water, for the first week. So seems to me, there is no way we could possibly get in a bunch of protein at this stage, right?
I've been seeing some folks who aren't much farther out than me talking about not liking their protein shakes and I'm wondering what type they are trying? Is it some type of clear liquid protein shake that would go along with the clear liquid phase? If so, that does sound nasty!
I LOVE chocolate protein shakes and can't wait 'til i'm far enough along to go to smoothie king and get me some!! But I have three more days of this! Ugh!

I think every doc is different. My doc allows protein shakes a couple of days out, but LOW sugar (6 gm or less), HIGH protein and low fat...
My surgery is tomorrow and my nut says do not worry about Protein til week three. Try to get it in but don't fret if you cannot. Fluids are essential.
I feel for you! I cannot imagine continuing with the clear liquid thing for long... I think one huge benefit is that my surgeon has had a sleeve himself He gets it from personal experience and he's pretty experienced so I feel comfortable with what he tells me to do Good luck!
I started my protein shakes right away.. made mine with 1% Milk, 2 Scoops Whey Protein Mix... blended it for a few secs - then put in fridge until the "foam" settled down some (about 1/2 hour) then sipped 6 to 8 oz (took like an hour) - did this 3 times per day - it was how I got my protein. Congrats on your surgery!

Also you can put plain protein like Unflavored Unjury into jello or crystal light. That at least gets some protein in
