Question Sleeve tomorrow. How much help will I need week 1?

    Hi everyone
I am going in very early tomorrow to get my sleeve done. I live with my 16 year old son and. Friend will be with me part of the day I get out of the hospital. Will I be able to function on my own after that while my son is at school and out on the weekend? Do I need friends to help me out and if so for how long and in what way? Thanks so much.

Good morning, congrats on getting your sleeve tomorro, and to answer your question, I think you will be fine home alone for most of the day...you almost will appreciate it. I was told no driving for the forst week though. I did...I was fine. As long as you don't have to go out much, then you'll be fine. Pain was not a factor for me. I walked, sipped and watched tv the first week or so. Althoug, I wasn't alone, I think I would have been just fine w/o help. Just make sure and have someone on hand, a phone call away, in case you find you do need extra help. Good luck w surgery tomorro...xoxo

Probably non after the first few hours arriving home, but if you have someone who can be present and bring meals/liquids it would be nice.

I was taking care of my kids by the second day. moving slow but doing it.

Maybe set up a tray with everything you might need...phone, chapstick, liquids, etc. The first day or two it's kind of hard to bend down if you have to pick anything up, but you should be fine.

I'd have things you might want at hand, like extra pillows in case you can't sleep lying down (many end up on the couch or in a recliner the first week)...
If you are in bed and think you might have trouble sitting up, here's a little trick. Tie a bathrobe tie or rope to the end of the bed or frame and make a loop you can reach. Then you can grab it to help you pull yourself up. I found getting from lying to sitting the hardest part.

I had my best friend spend the night w/me when I came home from surgery. She was a bypass patient and she insisted. But otherwise, I was fine and didn't need any help, altho I was slow moving.

You should be able to take care of yourself, take a shower, walk around, get up and down, you're just in slow motion, so you should be fine. You won't want to go out much, though.

I was on my own most of the first evening home and part of the first full day at home -- I have one 17 and one 20. It was rather nice to not have them hovering over me so I could nap, but they were around enough to get me water, tea, etc. It was nice to be the one waited on for a change.

I was a typical guy in that my wife and the nurses needed to coddle the crap out of me. I was in the hospital for 4 days and had tubes etc... the entire time. After a week I was feeling better but still a whinging child. I'm now more than a month out and feeling back to normal.

So as long as you aren't an overgrown child like me you should be fine.
