I'm at 4 months post op and I've been stalled for 3 weeks now... frustrating. Get used to it... it is an ongoing thing... up the protein and water... I'm blaming my working out.. muscle weighs more than fat, right? Please say yes!

Yes, muscle weighs more than fat...which is a good thing because muscle increases metabolism which burns fat. Change your workout and also what your eating..that will help you breakthrough the stall. Also, this is the time your body is reshaping itself!

Ok I have to say this muscle and fat weight the same exact thing. 1lb of muscle is the same as one lb of fat. That term drives me crazy. I Agree with angel change your workout.. Your stall is normal, way back when I used to diet and work out I used to come to stalls and even though I hated them I knew that i was going to see a big drop, and I did. If you are working out don't do the same thing. You body is getting used to what your doing to change it and make it harder so stalls wont happen so frequently. But i bet your losing inches even though you don't see it on the scale.
God knows I can understand about weight loss but I am to impatient to do it on my own hence me getting the surgery. You are losing weight so don't stress it. You know stress can hold weight on you as well.

Just to clarify this a little more. Of course two things that both weigh a pound weigh a pound, but two things the same size (volume) with different density will weigh a different amount. So a gallon of water weighs more than a gallon of oil, because a gallon is a measure of volume not weight. That's why oil floats on water - less dense! To give you another more stark example - imagine comparing a bar of gold with the same size bar of butter - the gold will be much heavier. Therefore gold weighs more than butter (when comparing the same size of each substance).

What this means in terms of people is that two people who fit into the same size clothing may weigh different amounts because of a difference in ratio of muscle mass to fat. The same volume of muscle weighs more than fat because it is denser tissue. Therefore, people can also stay the same weight on the scale but actually lose size because they are increasing the amount of denser muscle tissue, at the same time as they are losing high volume lower density fat.

So if people are working out, particularly with weights/resistance that builds muscle mass, it's important they focus on other indicators besides the scale in order to see their progress.

Hope this helps makes sense of the statement that muscle weighs more than fat.

You hit stalls throughout this whole process, I am a little over a year out now and I can maintain my weight, but every so often a few more pounds fall off, I don't complain I stay on my path and stabilize and then a few more will fall off about a month later. I noticed a pattern. In the beginning it was a week or two the stall would happen, but I kept plugging along and sure enough 5 more pounds would fall off in a weeks period. To date I have lost almost 120 pounds. Just don't look back, keep moving forward. And for the sugar thing, things just don't have the same appeal they used to, which is okay, cuz usually is is the stuff I should not have been eating in the first place. Switch to Tom's of Maine toothpaste it has a lot less sugar in it than regular toothpaste does

    Hi Leona,

I actually went out and bought Tom's yesterday. It has no fluoride in it which is good!! Its the fluoride that makes me sick. Thanks for your words of encouragement!

i think its the sorbitol in some toothpastes...the sugar free flavoring. i dont like sugar free anything much since surgery, i noticed my closeup toothpaste is disgusting to me now, and i've been using that since i was a teenager!

    H Lisa,

Thats the toothpaste that I ended up trying was Close up. I thought maybe cinnamon would be ok. I also cant stand anything that is sugar free either. The sugar free "flavor" is too destinctive for me. Makes me gag!
