    Default Hair loss

Hi I had the gastric sleeve feb13 2012, I am having lots and lots of hair loss. Is anyone going through this? This is very scary. If so how long does it last and will it come back? My protein levels are good.

Hi Sandy - You're right on schedule at about 4+ months out is when most of us start the hair loss.
It's partly the shock of surgery and meds and partly change in diet. It just takes a few months for it to show up.
If you're getting at least 70+ gms of protein a day then the only other things I can suggest are to:
have your vitamin levels checked (my b1 was low) and be sure you're taking a good b complex
Take biotin 5,000 mcg a day
Get your other vitamins and minerals.
Add some jello to your diet each day (gelatin is good for hair/nails)
I'm using a product called BioSil (drops). I can't say if my hair is growing back because it's just done falling out and it's time or if this is helping but the hair coming back in seems thicker than before surgery so I'll keep it up.
It lasted about 8 wks for me, then stopped as dramatically as it started and about 8 wks later it started to be noticeable it was coming back in.
Hang in there, this too shall pass.
Best NSV - fitting on a kid's amusement park ride with my 4 yr old grandson!
CFIDS =Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) Also dx with post-bariatric reactive hypoglycemia; and chronic gastritis (both sleeve complications). Permanently disabled.
Start weight 335, down to 218, up during gastritis. Have accepted there is no way to lose it with my hypoglycemia. Current weight 260. Currently doing 10 day sleeve reset and determined to get back down to my post surgical weight or close to it.

I see you are from MI - so am I. As Grace stated hair loss started about 4 months out and now at 9 months out I am seeing lots of regrowth. If you are feeling exceptionally anxious like I was I got the Extra strength Biotin for Hair and nails and take 1 a day and feel like it has helped the hair loss slow down and also helped the new growth come in strong.

There are lots of different things you can try to slow the loss, but the thing I have had the most luck with is the new Aveeno shampoo and conditioner called nourish and strengthen. It may have been a coincidence of timing, but when I started using it it no longer had a handful of hair with every washing!! Good luck and like the others said... This too shall pass and remember its all worth it

My hair started falling out at month 4 and it lasted until month 6.5 (ish). Stopped for awhile and then here it is month 8 and it seems to be falling out again-not as bad, but it is. Take your vitamins, protein and remember-it will grow back!

I saw a few bits o hair loss at 5 months and panicked, I increased my protein intake to around 80-100g and it soon stopped.

Does anyone know what percentage of sleevers actually lose hair? I have really fine hair to start with! I can't imagine losing any of it!

I'm right there with you, so I'd like to know this, too. I don't have any hair to spare!
