How long before swimming, after surgery?

I know this question could be presented to my dr, but I wanted to know, how many different answers there are. Just how long must one wait to go swimming, in a chrlorine pool, after surgery??? My surgery should be taking place within the next couple months, and we have a pool....

I'm about 3 weeks out and I'm petty sure I can swim. All my incisions are healed and I feel like I have the energy.

I was in my pool last summer about 4 weeks post op! Swim away ...

Great answers! Thanks for your responses. My husband said "it's going to ruin you summer", because of not being able to eat anything, or go swimming..I said, that's the point (the eating comment), and next summer I can swim next summer...In a 2 piece! LOL (ok, maybe a one piece)....

its been about 3 weeks since surgery, and last week while brisk walking on tredmil ..when i took my shert off, i noticed pleading from my belly button ( I had 1 incesion thru belllybutton"), my dr advised me to start swimming abit, but i dont wont the skin be too hydrated and break, i would just stick with light walking for at least 6 weeks same thing goes to Lifting weights too..

I've heard a lot longer! I think at one time I heard 2 month, maybe even 3. Something about straining your insides. I hope it's shorter! I'll definitely ask the surgeon when I go in, too.

Hi StephO! Well, In the beggining, I just would "be" in the pool, nothing strenuous, until I physically am ready. I was just wondering about the incisions, if they would be affected negativily by the clorinated water. I do plan to do laps, but after the Dr's ok...StephO, please ask, I know you are going to be seeing him before me...thanks! Sundevils...O wow, bleeding??? So was it the walking that did that?

Hey Stephy..see skin elasticity is an issue...especially if it is in bellybutton. Actually a week ago, the location of steches in bellybutton was infected and dr prescribed me Antibiotics & Mebo cream..Mebo makes the skin very hydrated..i think better not to be exposed to water whether shower or pool for long period..now am totally fine
Probably, i would rather dip myself in seawater because sea salts may help in tightening skin plus vitamin D but not for long ..between tanning and dipping myself in water for like 30 minutes and i would only do that at least 6 weeks out...and just stick with light walking...main purpose of it aiding in fat lose & healing

Stephy, I am a swim teacher and my doc gave me clearance to get in the water after 2 weeks. By then my incisions were healed. I had my gallbladder out in December and my surgeon gave me he same advice. Just make sure the incisions are closed/healed.

Thanks Michelle...I will go with that then! I want to be able to have fun in my pool for some portion of my 3 weeks off of work... Bonus that my surgery will be in the summer!

I was told to wait until incisions were healed before going into any body of water.
