Question Pre Op Diet.. Confused and need Help!!!!

OK so I need some advice and if you can

I was given my pre op diet for my gastric sleeve that is in exactly two weeks. The problem is that they were very vague when I asked what I could eat. They first send me a letter by email saying basically " hey drink two protein shakes a day and at night eat dinner and low on carbs... This for me is not to helpful.
    Why?
Well in first place I tried this diet yesterday for the first time and I was starving the whole day and then at night i ate my dinner so fast I didn't enjoy it at all.
Second I tried it today and I added to my diet homemade chicken broth and I ate a total of 2 1/2 cup trough out the day of course, I drank my 2 special k protein shake, and i had meat with salad for dinner and 1 cup of pumpkin soup.

Now here is were my problem starts I called the lady at my doctors office to ask her to be more specific and basically what the letter said is what she said.

So now I want to hear from you and if you had your surgery with Dr.Jawad in Ocala fl even better.

I want to know what you ate throughout the day and amounts if you remember because i think this will help feel better guided.

I appreciate your help so much and I'm anxiously waiting for your responses.

    Sorry I can't help you because I didn't do the pre-op diet.
I am just writing this because I think it is your doctor's duty to provide you better guidance about the pre-op diet. I am not saying he is a bad doctor because I don't know him, it's just that to me if your doctor is not able to provide you proper guidance for pre-op I would be worried about his guidance post-op. It is your right as a patient to be able to ask questions and have clear and satisfactory answers and you are entitled to demand this from your surgeon.
I had surgery out of my country and my doctor even though he is a very busy surgeon isavailable over the phone and he always answers my emails, he is always willing to provide clear information and guidance.
This surgery is a life change event and you should be able to feel that your doctor is providing to you all the support you need to succeed.

    Good luck!

I was simply advised to basically follow a high protein, low carb diet, keeping my carb under 60 grams a day. The protein shakes were recommended to me as snacks in place of less healthy snacks, but I still ate breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. I lost 12 pounds in the 6 weeks leading up to my surgery. That's only 2 lbs. each week, but it was progress. I think the doctors recommend different pre-op diets for different patients, depending on their experience and on how obese your are/what your BMI is. My BMI was 44 and I had 120 to lose.

Basically this diet is to reduce the size of your liver.
During your operation the liver has to be lifted out of the way so the surgeon can do his job.
There are quite a few YouTube videos that show this.
So your diet should be extremely low in fat and sugar.
The shake will hold you off during the day if you keep busy.
Night was difficult for me, I was told anything green like broccoli etc, no potato, no meat, no peas or corn.
I had 3 shakes per day and at night I was allowed the greens.
I have heard of cases where people did not stick to the VLC (Very Low Calorie) diet and were rejected on the operation table for fear of damaging the liver? So better get it right!

My pre-op diet was for 4 weeks prior to my surgery. Protein shake for breakfast, protein shake for lunch, and then a small low-fat meal. Again, it's to shrink your liver. I was told that if they go in to operate and your liver is too large then they will send you home and make you start again. I just couldn't deal with having to wait any longer. So, I stuck to it. I drank lots of water. Like an insane amount of water.
FYI, the more fat you eat the larger your liver. The larger your liver the more fragile it is and more likely to rip or tear. Torn liver is bad news. They have to move your liver during the surgery, so they want it as supple as possible. Just know if you don't follow your doctor's instructions and your liver is too large or fragile, they may send you home and not operate.

Liver Talk Keeps me very focus hehehe..

Can u eat a good amount of lettuce or a small portion?..

I asked my doctor today if it was fine for me to drink a homemade chicken broth throughout the day and they said it was fine.

However liver talking makes me think i should stick to the shake and a small portion like you said....

The first day was the worst off all I had shake/shake/ then dinner and today on the third day i changed it a bit i had shake/lunch/shake. And i felt very satisfied throughout the day.

    Well once again thank you..

On my third of Pre Op Diet. First one was hard. Second even more. Third looking better. Lets see what happens tomorrow
    Good night

Hey Sam, yes is serious stuff!
The first few days are usually pretty tough, headache is often due to VLC and little to no sugar, but you adjust, give it 4 days. In the second week I was doing it tough in the last few days, Dr said I could add an extra shake if I really needed, you might ask your Dr if needed. Depends on what shake most are all VLC, get one that's got heaps of protein as this will make you feel full longer.
as for the lettuce, I would keep it to no more than 1 head a day.
The "home made" chicken broth, how are you making that? My wife used to make this and it was FULL of fat, careful, you will only be cheating yourself.
To be on the safe side I would buy the beef or chicken broth from supermarket, make sure no fat.
You can also drink Miso Soup (Japanese soup)

Don't make home-made chicken broth if it's from actual chicken. But if you are drinking like disolved chicken bullion you'll be fine.
Also, eating a smaller dinner will help your body deal with "only" proteing shakes tomorrow.

Homemade chicken broth is fine if you refrigerate it before you eat it. Then, when it is cold, the fat will congeal on the top of the liquid and can be easily scooped off...providing you essentially with fat-free chicken broth that has the seasonings you enjoy. Of course, you will reheat the broth before you eat it (AFTER you have removed all the fat)...goes without saying...

When i made my chicken broth I used:

    Chicken bullion
    celery
    onion
    carrots
    cabbage
and half of a chicken breast with no skin or fat.

after everything was ready i put in the blender. There were no signs of grease in the broth. I made enough for four days. And today is my forth day.

but after today i will look into that fat free chicken broth and miso soup.

    Thank you

Today is the forth day on my pre op diet and I feel great because I got rid of my homemade chix broth because I was afraid it had grease that I couldn't see.
I had a healthy lunch today and didn't eat all because I was full lol! Can you believe that? It wasn't even a lot.
Any ways thanks for ur support.

My Dr. told me to have:
    - 3 protein shakes a day
    - decaf tea - black
    - veggie, beef or chicken broth (I have chosen low sodium)
    - sugar free popsicles
    - crystal light
    - sugar free jello

I thought I would die the first day. This is my 6th day, and I am ok

    sam20,

when in doubt call and ask to speak to your doctor not anyone else in the office explain that the letter was not that clear to you. you need to follow your gut and what it is telling you if you are uncertain then just speak up remember it is first and foremost ur body.
