Oh some will say you cannot drink coffee after the sleeve... PHTTTTT I drank decaf the day I came home... one sip and I was like OMG this swill is nasty and went right back to regular.
The thing is too that I was still loopy when the doctor told me "hernias" so I don't know what kind of hernias, hiatal, stomach what? Guess I'll find out my fate tomorrow at 1 ... listen closely that'll be me screaming in frustration at another surgery
It will be good to know what they say so that you know where you are at. Here in australia they don't seem concerned about coffee at all but yea it might be acidic and stuff and not good for ulcers. BUT GAWD i can't imagine you having a bypass, you are tiny as it is!!!!! I would be worried for you YIKES!! Hope fully it can be sorted without that. It seems so funny that it has come up after all that time, unless you were drinking a pot of coffee a day and smoking yourself to death which clearly you're not!! And the hernias!!!? It's such a shame as you've done so well and then have these issues now. I hope you get all the answers and that they fix you up without doing a bypass. Oh and kudos for NOT drinking a pot of coffee a day while trapped doing tax returns LOL!!
Oh no I prefer a bottle of xanax be close at hand during tax season lol
Thanks and yeah I am going to do everything I can to argue with the doctor today to not have the bypass. I got to 98 pounds at one time and was in size 10 - 12 jeans I was buying in the girls section and that was just way too thin for me at 5'4" (a problem I never thought I'd have for sure) ... this has been a long road of tests and doctors and I am at the end of my rope here. I don't know why my family doc didn't refer me to a local bariatric specialist in the first place vs a regular surgeon who THEN referred me to the bariatric one. I'm also kind of surprised I didn't get a lecture from the guy here on the fact that I had it done in Mexico...
Welp by 1:30 I'll know the course of action... at least I can take my laptop and work from the hospital as usual
I think it is GERD. Move quickly and avoid salty foods. I have this issue, too.
Five years out also and no hernias, ulcers, but, I have noticed that I get the occasional heartburn. By occasional, I mean once or twice a week. Just started happening within the last several months. Nothing like reflux where I get awakened in the middle of the night or something. In fact, I can control it with one Tums. I try to keep up with what I ate to see if maybe that's the cause of the heartburn.
I can tell you that all of the things that used to kill me before the sleeve do not bother me now. Especially margaritas. Couldn't drink them before, but now...well....now I can drink them. If they are causing the problem from time to time, then I'm willing to suffer.....lol.
I'm 55 years old. You said you are 60. Could be your body is going through some adjustments related to age and one of the results is the reflux. I'm not a doctor, but, I do play one on here.
As my old man once told me.....growing old ain't for wussies.
I'm confused. Bypass is a treatment for GERD? I didn't know that.

Yes, reflux is felt by those who are aging gracefully.

4 years out and no GERD, hernias or ulcers. Really no sleeve-related issues. Occasional mild heartburn after my 3rd or 4th cup of coffee or drinking far too many Apple Crowns, but nothing a few Rolaids or Zantac can't take care of. Sure hope I have no surprises waiting for me in the next couple years. Good luck with resolving your complications. ((BTW, I have a good friend who had bypass 8 years ago. She has constant problems with ulcers, gastritis and the worst GERD of anyone I know)
You calling me old tinman? Lol oh wait I am....dammit. well no surgery for now thank goodness. Gonna follow up in 3 months with another endoscopy then we'll see if the ulcers have cleared up. He seemed more concerned that I would lose more weight than the impact of the painful heartburn
From a physiologic standpoint, I don't understand how the bypass would help with ulcers/gastritis/GERD....maybe by allowing food to pass out of the stomach quickly, without going through the pyloris (which is preserved in the sleeve), it keeps stomach acid and food from being able to jump up into the esophagus.
if you have a hiatal hernia, getting that repaired is my first thought before resorting to a full bypass. Also, trying a more bland diet? Have you altering your food at all to see if that helps?
