    Default 50 for 50

    Hello,

I just joined this site. I am looking at having gastric sleeve Dec 2016.
I am here for information and support through this journey.

What is the first thing you would tell someone that was looking to have this procedure?

Edit- Ha ha, I just realized I didn't say what the 50 for 50 was!!???
I turn 50 7/2017 and I want to be down 50lbs for my birthday.
Now the title will make sense.

do thorough research. check the forums, like this one, but also don't be afraid of professional journals and research.

I was clueless about the post op food progression, well, not totally clueless, but I could def have been better prepared.

Congrats on your decision. I'm having the sleeve on 12/12 in Albuquerque. I'm finding one day I'm mentally prepared and the next day I really enjoy eating a lot. Got to do this if I want to live long enough to see my new granddaughter grow up so I'm very committed. We can share some of our experiences anyway. good luck with your sleeve.

Check out self pay in Mexico. Some can be less expensive than the deductible with insurance.

    Make sure you read this....

    http://www.gastricsleeve.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=60164

The surgery takes about an hour, but the work you have to put into it to make it work takes all day, everyday, for the rest of your life.

    WELCOME!

You've come to by far the best site for support, no-nonsense suggestions, knowledge, wisdom and experience.

I did a ton of research...I highly recommend watching Dr Matthew Weiner videos on YouTube. They're full of useful information. Ask Dr A is also on YouTube and may answer a lot of your questions.

I used the wait time to practice healthy post-op behaviors. Surgery date will be here before you know it.

This is hands down the best decision I ever made for me and my health. This is NOT a magic tool. Though if used properly it is a very powerful tool.

Best of luck as you embark on your journey!

Congrats on your decision and welcome! My surgery is in January and I just do a lot of research. I like Clausie on youtube and I'm making sure I get my mind right. Here's a list of books another forum member shared with me. Good luck on your journey!
"The emotional first aid kit" by Cynthia Alexander
"Eat it up" by Connie Stapleton
"Get out of your head and into your life" by Steven Hayes (this is not bariatric specific, but a good read for general mental health issues....which is what obesity is)
"Life Without Ed" by Jenni Schaefer
Here are a couple links I found helpful also...

Wow. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I have done a TON of research! I have seen Dr. Wiener's videos and I LOVE Clusie! She is the bomb. I have been thinking about this decision for over a year now. I am continuing to research and put in place "healthy post op" habits. I have my doc already and I am on the last leg of hoops to jump through for insc auth. Thanks again everyone! I appreciate your input.

The first thing I'd tell someone who wants a sleeve is the following...

Weight loss surgery will not ever cure your obesity. However, weight loss surgery is a powerful tool that will help put your obesity into remission if you use it in the manner it was intended.

The weight loss surgery community is full of people who scratch their heads, wondering why they have regained weight several years after the original procedure. The reality is that most obese peoples' bodies are primed to regain. All you need to do is graze on slider foods (chips, popcorn, crackers, pretzels, cookies) and the weight will come back with a vengeance.

To keep a long story short, stay vigilant. Work your sleeve to its fullest. Protein-rich foods should form the basis of your meals. Watch your intake of slider foods since they are the root cause of most peoples' weight gain after surgery. Good luck to you!
