I get bad migraines from artificial sweetners. I see a lot of people eating sugar -free things.
What if I can't eat sugar-free??
Any suggestions ?
Thank you!
I would talk with your Dr. about it but if you really can't handle sugar-free just try for low sugar. i know aspartame gives me horrible headaches. Plus remember you got a sleeve not the bypass so unless you are diabetic you don't have the malabsorption. Hang in there, I understand being new at this because I am too so I wish you luck. I look forward to seeing the suggestions as well. =0)
I bet you don't want to experiment with this either! Migranes are so horrid! I get them from aspartame (Equal, Nutraswee) but not from sucrolose (Splenda), which is a reverse molecular structure from real sugar. Honey, brown rice syrup, natural cane sweetener, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, Agua Guave (spelling?), any kind of nectar or syrup that is not specifically "sugar-free" (no added sugar is not the same thing) is capable of adding lots and lots of calories and triggering the phenomenon of craving if you are a food addict. Also food additives of all types can potentially cause migranes and cravings! Of course the best thing to do is eat organic, made-from-scratch meals. (Yeah right! who has time or energy?) I was 100% refined carbohydrate free and free of most additives for almost 10 years and maintained a 255 lb weight loss (it was miraculous!) but it was no way to live for me as I had to precook and premeasure and cart my food everywhere with me. I also stuffed myself on vegetables which kept me from volumizing on "bad" foods. I am hoping the surgery will help me with the volumizing and give me an extra kick to avoid refined carbs that might make me feel sick.
Malitol, Sorbitol and other "alcohol" sweeteners often have a slightly bitter aftertaste and also add calories and for some people, cravings. They are cheap additives to aspartame and sucrolose products to help them congeal or bake or enhance the sweet without using more aspartame or sucrolose.
If you want to get creative and cook for yourself; fruit is sweet, fruit sauces and jams are sweet and can be added to foods while cooking. They of course also add calories and sometimes taste funny but you can calculate them into your total calories for the day and they have nice nutrition in them. (Once baked a whole grain cake with applesauce as sweetener in the cake and for the "frosting"...it was awesome!)
On the other hand, we don't need sweet things to live! And many of us really don't need sweet things to be happy. During the days that I didn't eat sugars, cooked carrots and cooked onions and whole fruits were sometimes like "candy" to me. It took me a while to come to that place but it can happen.
I am sorry this was so long. I guess I got on a soapbox. I pray you find a way to make the food work for you and maybe experiment with Stevia and Splenda.
I don't eat alot of sugar now so that isn't the problem..
I have just seen after surgery poeple saying they are eating SF jello, Sf popsicles etc... That is the very knid of sweetners the I can't have.
So I am just wondering how to cope when Clear things are all we can have.
I guess broths and things like that will be best for me.
Thanks for your imput!!
Splenda is a good option. Splenda is actually a sugar, so it is not artificial. However, our tastebuds read it differently because the molecules are so much smaller than actual sugar. Also, our bodies process it differently. My husband is allergic to anything with aspartame, so we use this instead.
Splenda is not sugar. Artificial sweetner do not come from sugar. They are man made.
