Red face 4 Days Post Op!

Hi everyone! Well surgery went perfect. I woke up with my BP really high. Never had BP that high before. That continued well until Saturday. They kept giving me medication for it and it would go back down. The gas in my stomach and chest was the worst. Felt like it was having chest pains. Tummy does not hurt. What bothers me the most is my hiatal hernia repair. It does hurt and i knew that going in. Not something i can't deal with but very very uncomfortable. Liquid pain med helps a lot. I wanted to walk right after i got out of recovery because the pain in my chest was so bad and i felt like if i could get up i could burp. Finally they let me walk. I did and still burp a lot. It helps so much to get that gas out.
I am on Day 4 today. Sipping 4 oz clear fluids every hour while awake. Very slow sips. Complete chewable vitamins 2 X's a day and antacids as well. My husbands stocked the island up with bottles of water, sugar free drinks and protein shakes. Low Fat/Low Sodium Soup is in the pantry. The warm stuff has gone down really well. In the hospital i just wanted room temperature stuff. Broth was way too salty and sugar free drinks were too sweet. They need to work on that part. Other then that my experience was a good one. They took excellent care of me. They were surprised how quickly i wanted to get out of bed and walk. They said they usually have to drag Sleeve and RNY patients out of bed to get them to walk. They sooner you walk the sooner you can go home and rest. Can't rest in a hospital setting. It's impossible. Last night i had a popsicle for the first time. Really enjoyed it,no pain or anything. Thanks for all the well wishes!

Glad you are doing well. Anyone reading this, I agree, walking in the hospital really helped me with gas pain (chest, shoulders, and back) I walked and walked and walked. When I was not walking I was sleeping. I hope it just keeps getting better for you!!!

Congrats on your surgery!I agree totally with the walking. I couldn't even lie down. It definitely helps the gas also. Hope you continue to feel good. It does get easier every day. I had a real hard time sleeping up until 2 nights ago. I was having crazy dreams and waking up sweating and could only sleep on the back it was terrible. I actually slept on my stomach last night, which means I am healing

Thank you Mary Ellen! That was the best advice i got as far as post-op information. The only thing that helps get rid of the gas is walking and it also stimulates bowel function. Oh and the reason my BP was so high was because they were pushing fluids through me so fast my heart didn't like it. Once they slowed the IV rate down it cleared up on it's own. Best of luck to everyone. One day at a time here. It's all up hill from here. Hugs

I am only taking a nap in the afternoon and sleeping off/on through the night. Last night I slept 3 hours then go up and went to the restroom. Then another 3 hrs before everyone woke up for school and work. After they left I slept 2 hrs more. So about 8 hrs total at night then a 2 hour nap. I honestly think by Friday I will be able to be left on my own. if I would have just had the gastric sleeve I wouldn't be hurting. I don't even feel my tummy at all. Best of luck to you and I think you should be totally ready to go back to work within your time frame. Walk A lot!!! Follow your doctors orders to a T! Every day is easier then the last. Mainly sore.

I had hiatal hernia repair also. My surgery date was 9/8. Everything went well, but I still get very sleepy mid-day. That's ok, I just nap, wake up and start over. Hope all is well.

I went back 14 days after the surgery. I was ok. I find I have to take lunch though. Rest and destress. The first 2 days were the worst. Then slept 14 hours a day for 2 days then was fine. I guess I figured it out.

When I was home I would only take 1 - 60 -90 min nap a day and sleep 9 - 10 hours a night. I did have some issues getting to sleep due to pain, but then I remembered the pain medicine and that helped.

Good luck. It is possible to get back to work after 2 weeks.

    Chiara
