When is it ok to sip on a glass of wine? I,m only a week out. Thoughts?
I waited about 2 months. No issues, you do get drunk faster tho! so be careful

Well, the medical staff will tell you never have a drink, especially carbonated bevs. I had one glass of wine when I was 2 mos post op, and I just had my first martini (mixed weak) and I am 3 mos post op. I agree with lolette33, your body will tell you. Just take a few sips until you make sure it is agreeing with you.
That's kind of harsh. Those are questions I have too. I don't think those questions mean someone has a drinking problem at all. Kind of presumptuous on your part.

I had a pina colada in my second week. The problem wasn't the alcohol though, it was the pineapple sherbet icecream that was in it! My doctor really reamed me a new one! I felt an inch tall when I left his office. He really hurt my feelings. I just happened to tell him that I had had an episode of the dumping sydrome that we always hear of. The icecream was so rich that it went thru me violently. I cheated on my second week by eating that but didn't know that my consequences would have been so bad. I missed most of the 4th of July fireworks bc I couldn't stay out of the bathroom. We are all adults and that doesn't mean that we have a drinking problem bc we want some so soon out of surgery. It just means we're trying to find some normalcy in our lives. This is a forum where we should be able to discuss any and all issues without fear of judgement on anyone's part.
I had a glass of wine one month after surgery. No issues. I had a one ounce of a great expensive rye last monday. I sipped it for about 30 minutes. No issues at all. I had a glass of wine the other night after one of the most stressful work weeks (80 hours my first 6 days back to work). It made me all hot and sweaty and I almost hurled. So its a your milage may vary kinda thing.
I am not a huge drinker. I love a good glass of wine sometimes (I love port but will not have the carbs now). I really love a fine Scotch, Bourbon, or Rye. But the ones I like are hard to come by and released one time a year at best. So I would never drink them to get drunk. Its a sip and savor kinda thing. My Dietitian says one year no booze.
My dietitian in my doctor's office said the same thing, as did the book of instructions/guidelines I brought home with me.
ETA: I should say, though, that I have certainly eaten things before I was supposed to. My biggest fear with alcohol isn't empty calories or anything else. I know I had a problem with food if not an addiction to food, and I was already a fairly cheap drunk. I don't want to have problems with alcohol down the line, so I'm okay with avoiding it now. That's a very personal decision that each one of us has to make for ourselves, though.
My doctor/dietician said no drinking for 6 weeks and then was surprised when I followed his advice, thinking I would have "cheated" earlier. Of course being in an American in Scotland, even before surgery, at 4-5 units a week, I was considered a light drinker. About 6 months out I ended up back at 4-5 units a week (mostly wine, unless I don't want to get drink and I will spend an hour drinking a bottle of beer and even then have a hard time finishing it). I still get quite tipsy with only 1-2 units, where before it would have taken a good 5+ to get to the same level.
I do think the AA comment was a bit harsh. I am sure a lot of people wonder when their lifestyle will be able to return and having a sociable glass of wine is something that is perfectly controllable for a lot of people without being a problem.
