Default Why no drinking during meals

    Hey gang,

I have a few questions about drinking liquids.

    1. I keep reading about NOT sucking drinks through a straw only sipping, what's the point of this.
    2. Why do the doctors say no drinking with meals, 30 minutes before and after.
    3. Can I chug a glass of water after a workout or does the new smaller stomach prevent this.
    4. I rarely drink beer but my paperwork says to alcohol for 1 year.
    5. Do liquid foods such as soup pass through the stomach or will it be restricted.

I love cereal more than anything, will I be able to eat grape nuts or cherrios ever again ?

    TIA

The most a can do is three gulps at a time. Then I feel it. At least for the foreseeable future I will not be downing a bottle of water. It hurts. If you"'ve just eaten or are about to eat it sill either make you goo full go eat, cause you pain or make you vomit.

Using a straw or chewing gum increases the chances of air into the stomach.

No more gulping water, I could do the same thing but you will have to learn to sip. Sometimes I forget and take a big drink and I feel it immediately. It hurts. Even a tiny amount of alcohol will really hit you hard. It can also be something you could get easily hooked on. The liquids like soup will fill you up quickly. You will only be able to eat a small amount of food after surgery. Of course that is by design so you can lose the weight.
If your really serious about the weight, these changes will not be hard. You have to get the mental aspects of this resolved before the surgery though or you will not be successful.
Good luck in your future surgery if that is what you choose to do.

    1. I keep reading about NOT sucking drinks through a straw only sipping, what's the point of this.
You will suck in air, which will hurt..and not be able to fully control how much you are taking in, but it is not forever.
    2. Why do the doctors say no drinking with meals, 30 minutes before and after. There is just so much room, you want it for protein not liquid. After is so you don't wash the food through too quickly.
    3. Can I chug a glass of water after a workout or does the new smaller stomach prevent this. You should be able to "chug" water at about 6 months out but never as much as before.
    4. I rarely drink beer but my paperwork says to alcohol for 1 year. This is because of addiction transference. It's a very real hazard. Also, most folks can't hold their liquor after this surgery.
    5. Do liquid foods such as soup pass through the stomach or will it be restricted. Liquids pass through more quickly, but there is restriction. it takes time for the pylorus valve to let it through, believe me your sleeve will tell you when you over do it.

I love cereal more than anything, will I be able to eat grape nuts or cherrios ever again ? yes, you will just not right away

Since you're a White Sox fan, I can understand why you want to drink a beer when you watch them play this year.

It was pretty much summed up by others.
Also, besides there is only a little room for food or liquid at one time, liquids can wash some of that food slurry through your stomach too quickly.

Inside some of us is a thin person struggling to get out, but they can usually be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake.

My case is a little bit different, I have EOE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis)so every time I eat, my throat burns. The doctor has given me the green light to take very small sips after every bite in order to help with the burning. He told me that if it is very small sips that it wouldn't make a difference but again, my case is different so talk to your doctor. The straw is so that air doesn't get into the stomach and fill you up or cause pain. The alcohol is best just given up on because it is nothing but calories. This is a life changer, but its for the best. Good luck!
