    Default Red Meat

I read that red meats are not allowed until 4 moths post op. My Dr didn't mention anything about that. So dose it have to be after 4 months or can I eat it before that ??

I can't remember for sure, but I know I ate Wendy's chili as soon as I hit the pureed phase and it was great for protein. I did put it in the blender a few times, but it is so soft that it goes down well. Maybe they meant dense red meat like steak? A lot of people also had roast in the crockpot because it is so soft. I threw a couple of cans of soup over it and it made a nice liquidy sauce. Best to you! Melissa

    I guess I read it wrong -
I took this as meaning "beef"

3rd to 4th Week Post-Op (Home Soft Diet):
Blended meat and poultry (the texture of baby food), soft poached eggs
    • Canned and/or ****** baby foods that are low in sugar and higher in protein (meat and chicken) are acceptable.

    Then I reread:
    4 Months Post-Op:
Veal, crunchy fruits and vegetables (including salads). Beef and pork can be introduced but poultry and fish are recommended due to lower fat content.

I'm in week 6 and have had filet mignon. Yikes I'm such a cheater!

    Guess I'm confused as well.

I introduced red meat gradually at 6 weeks. Chewed lots and ate small amounts (it fills you up quickly).

I started with ground beef and chicken breast at week four and have had no issues. At week four I was also cleared to have liquor every now and then in moderation.

My nut and the post op diet suggests ground beef and I believe poultry. They stress ground. I am assuming that things like meatloaf and steak (steak I don't eat, so that's not a problem!) are out.

Steak and pork are very dense and harder to digest until your stomach has fully healed. I was on a business trip about 6 or 7 weeks post surgery, and at a dinner where I did not choose my own menu. Everyone received the same thing...filet mignon (not that I'm complaining!). I took small bites and chewed thoroughly, and I was fine (could not finish the entire portion, however, and did not even try)...joked that I had had a late lunch. That meal was also when I had my first glass of wine post-surgery. All was fine. Now, 3 1/2 years later, dense meats still fill me up faster; but I eat anything I want.

I started with I shellfish at purée and then moreso at soft foods. Crab cake was the big one when on our vacation. I could eat 1/2 of one. I also ate one piece of cooked shrimp. But couldn't have a second piece, and don't know that I could eat it cold yet...

I'm waiting on mussels and clams and calamari as those are hard to chew small first. But scallops seem that they'd be easy too. I'm thinking texture is most important. Ground meat should be fine but a steak or lamb chop not so easy...

Claudia B, your profile picture always cracks me up! It reminds me of my favorite aunt who was a rather large woman when she would hang the wash. Her bloomers were like that and her bras hung to the ground. I loved sitting in her lap because I felt totally protected.
