"Net carbs "represent the total carbohydrate content of the food minus the fiber content and sugar alcohols (if in the product). So, the quest bar probably has 19 grams of fiber and sugar alcohols ( combined) which make it 3 "net carbs". The Net carbs number reflects the grams of carbohydrate that significantly impact your blood sugar level. Foods that are low in Net carbs are less likely to interfere with weight loss. With that being said, I'm not sure how your Dr. counts the carbs when he says to only have 5.. maybe call your nutritionist and check if they mean net carbs or carbs in general. I do know that Quest bars are very popular on here ( and with personal trainers, etc.) so they may be OK- but check.

Funny enough, I am eating one right now.

Amanda has it right. Under 5 seems a little difficult to find, so like she said I would check.

I eat a Quest bar almost every day and am steadily losing weight. I eat the Quest bar instead of drinking a protein shake.

Quest bars are the bomb diggity! Can't wait until I can have them again. SO many yummy flavors. My NUT also recommended them.

My dietitian is supper ridged.. No protein bars at all., no juices and even no nuts!
I asked my doctor yesterday and was told no protein bars. I am following just about everything they say now . I am sure I will make some changes at some point . It is funny because it seems so many doctors and dietitians say different things.

I would never suggest that you don't listen to your NUT or Dr, but you have to find what works for you. Good luck!!

I let myself get in the habit of eating protein bars instead of real food (and they were 3 or 4 net carbs) and my weight loss stalled for months. I had to ween myself off them to get my weight to start dropping again.

Just remember, protein bars are not a substitute for real food.

Sorry, but I think your doctor and NUT are nuts...

That said, it's JMHO. You need to do what's right for you.

I eat one Quest bar 5 days out of 7, and I am losing steadily. I rely on them hugely for fibre - 17g!! Where else can you get 20g protein, 5-10g fat and 17g fibre for 160-200 calories??

Nobody is infallible. Sometimes people become very rigid in their thinking and resistant to change. They hold tenaciously to old prejudices. When I look at the sheer number of surgeons and NUTs you can find on this site alone, and how many of them support/recommend the use of protein powder and protein bars (GOOD ones, that is), I have to seriously wonder on what your Dr and NUT are basing their opinions.

Have you asked them why they advocate a position that is so different from the hundreds of other bariatric surgeons and nutritionists? I'd love to hear their answers as to why they are right and all the other equally educated and experienced professionals are wrong...
Be the change you wish to see in the world. (Not Gandhi's exact words, but close enough)

Both say protein bars have too many carbs and not to do any protein. Supplements over 5 gr carbs. The reason they say avoid. It's is that many people just plan eat to many of them once they start. I do get the Protein packs with meat ,cheese and yes nuts
I do eat them. I know in time I will became comfortable making more of my own choices . That is why I do pay attention to what others are eating and what works for them. Thanks for all the replies .
