Default This might be a stupid question

Soup...do you eat it? I've craved a good bowl of chicken soup, I've made it several times during this very cold winter for my family but have hesitated to eat any...why...because we are not supposed to have liquids with our food...do you consume soup

Interesting... I haven't really looked at it that way. I am curious to hear what people have to say about it as well.

I do eat soups. However I strive to make them as high in protein and low in starchy carbs as possible. For example I made some chicken corn chowder the other day. I took the recipe I had and modified it. Called for 1 lb chicken breasts and I used just over 3 lbs. Called for 1 cup frozen corn and I used 1/4 cup. Called for 4 new potatoes and I used one. I also added a scoop (1/3 cup) of powdered milk to boost protein in the broth. It turned out really delicious. I was able to put several individual servings in the freezer for lunches or future cold evenings. I make soup an occasional meal because I know I feel fuller longer when I eat solid foods. Also sometimes soup makes me desire crackers and 2 are never enough.

I have mostly acted as if was a meal and not drank fluids before or after. I am in the purée stage so I have removed the noodles from light chicken soup- leaving chicken, carrots some celery n onion (small amounts) and blended it and while I could drink it I certainly treated it as a meal. Also when I could drink tomato bisque soup. In the very beginning I couldn't drink much anyway but still- maybe due to the small amount of fat that would be in true chick broth (not from bouillon) it felt more like a "meal" than straight fluids. I added protein shakes and other cream soup (broths only- before pureeing) pretty early that I didn't have much straight broth meals post op- except in MX but I just didn't have much period.

I do eat soup, I make healthy, high-protein varieties. However my nutritionist would rather I not eat much soup. Because of the liquid it doesn't fill you up like eating just the protein.

Absolutely eat soup. You are just not supposed to drink fluid with your meal. You are being too literal with the idea. It is to prevent stretching the pouch, so as with all meals especially the earlier in post op you are, you need to eat slowly, and listen to your body telling you if you are full. There is evidence that all things being equal, calories etc. that eating the same in a soup, you will lose more weight.

Thank you for the replies, no real consensus here at all...I guess I should have expected that...lol. I've made seafood bisque lowfat, as fat really makes me sick and have enjoyed that and have toyed with the idea of split pea soup, which I am making now, but have stayed away from anything broth based. Thanks for the replies, would love more.

Your pea soup is perfect! As for other soups, yes, I have soup, but we always make our really thick "stoup", and I eat the chunks first, don't really drink all the broth. At this point, I would think you are regularly getting all your protein from food, and are eating pretty normally, you shouldn't have to be so legalistic about foods anymore. Enjoy your soup!

Personally, I would just eat the solids in the soup and maybe a very tiny amount of the liquid.

Add a scoop of protein in it and you're good to go Everything that enters the mouth (and you know what I mean Dy lmao) must have some nutritional value (according to my surgical team lol)

Dy how far out were you when you started making your green smoothies again??? It is truly the one thing I miss. I used to make them from kale, spinach, frozen fruits, gogi berries, avocado - whatever I had - with the nutria bullet it emulsifies it to the point that there are no chunks.
