My insurance (BCBS) will cover skin surgery after I have maintained a weight loss of 100 lbs for 12 months. To support this, my surgeon is documenting the challenges I have with the excess skin. Your insurance may be different, reach out to them if you haven't already. Congrats on your 1 year anniversary.

I also have BCBS and they reject any plastic surgery....period. I've lost 90 pounds and have a LOT of skin, rashes, etc. and they still say NO WAY. I'm having my plastics done at a teaching hospital by a 6th year resident. Each policy is different. Best of luck to you!

I have BCBS and I was advised that a Panniculectomy (Only exess skin removal) is covered but Abdominalplasty (Muscle repair & Tightening) is not covered. I also have to have lost 100lbs or more, and keep it off for a minimum of 1 year to get approval. So what I plan on doing is get the Insurance to cover what they will and pay the cash price for all the other work I need. But it saves you money if you get them all done at the same time. The Hospital fees, Doctor fees, meds, Anesthesia will be all paid by what the Insurance covers.
    Reason: Typo
Pre Surgery: 312lbs (Gone Forever!) CHECK
Day of Surgery: 288lbs (Yes, On my way) CHECK
1st Personal Goal: 250lbs (Whooo Hoooo!) CHECK
Doctor's Goal: Down 100lbs (YES!!!!) CHECK
    2nd Personal Goal: 200lbs (Onederland here I come!)CHECK
High School Senior Weight: 185lbs (OMG!!!!)CHECK
    Ultimate Goal : 175lbs: (YAY!!!)

Not all BSBC plans are the same. I was covered for breast reconstruction and implants. I had a mastectomy on the one side and the other one was made to be even as allowed by law (or it was when I had it done) I had to fight with them because they said only the removed one was covered but I was on a private self pay plan through my former corporation, I had just read on their site over that weekend that they did cover both breasts, the removed one and to make the other one symmetrical and match, When they rejected mine i appealed and won stating that I wasn't worth less than a person on private pay insurance. They ended up covering nearly a quarter of a million dollars for my surgeries. Had complications and 1 turned into 6 but I never paid a dime and I had already met my deduc and out of pocket for the year. Anything the insurance didn't pay my doctor wrote off and she handled every claim so I didn't have to deal with the insurance company once.

was the mastectomy for cancer or something related like the brca gene? i just cant think of a reason that after WLS i would need a mastecomy. im sure bcbs covers reconstructive surgeries in certain cases but from what im hearing its very hard for just post WLS reconstruction.

When I called to get info on WLS the agent at BCBS said just so you know ahead of time your policy doesn't cover skin tightening. So great I'll be out of pocket!

Sorry to hear that. I have BCBS Michigan and they will cover the cost of skin surgery provided I have maintained a loss of at least 100 lbs for 12 months. Muscle tightening is not included.

Just got back from Mexico and had a body lift. My Insurance wouldn't pay a dime. But that's ok cause I look better and better every day! Good Luck
