I'm scheduled to get sleeved on Jan 22. My doctor didn't required for me to do a pre op diet. Has anyone else gone through this? It seems like everyone is doing the pre op diet.
Interesting. Makes me wonder why so many other doctors insist on putting their patients through this. I'm going in for surgery this Wednesday, and I've been struggling with the pre-op diet. It's awful. I put a banana in my shake, and have a yogurt every day. When I feel too week, I'll have a tiny bowl of cereal. Hey, I'm only human.
I have heard of people not having to follow the pre-op diet, but most do. But then the length really varies too. I had to do 5 days, many others do 2 weeks.
I guess only your surgeon could answer "Why?"
It's all over the place with the pre-ops. I've seen some with a month long liquid, some 2 weeks, some 1 week (mine), some just 24 hours. Same with advancing the post op diet. They all have their preferences, can't imagine one is right and all the others are wrong. So, you just do the best you can to follow what your doctor tells you. Good luck!
I didn't have a pre-op diet outside of clear liquids the day before and nothing after midnight. So I don't really count it. Some say a pre-op diet is done to shrink the fat around the liver I believe. In my case my doctor does a liver biopsy when he does the sleeve so maybe that is why he doesn't do the lengthy diet. I have no clue, but its not unusual.
The main purpose for the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver so it's not in the way during surgery. But, every doctor requires different things and though I was on liquids only for 2 weeks it is not required for cleansing/shrinking your liver. I'd ask why but I wouldn't be too concerned.
No preop diet for me just clear liquids the day before surgery.

1 month: 25 lost (194-10 day stall)
3 months: 9 lost (173-halfway to goal!)
5 months: 7 lost (161-1week stall)
7 months: 4 lost (152-4 week stall)
9 months: 1 lost (145-1 month stall)
10 months: 0 lost (145-2month stall
14 months: 0 lost (145-7 month stall)
My goal: 145...originally 129 but my body said no!
I did not have to do a preop diet. My doctor said I'm so close to 40 bmi he didn't want me to lose. Plus with my age the chance of a fatty liver is minimal. All I have to do is clear liquids the day before surgery. I'm sure your doctor knows what he is doing
I had the full two weeks. I like to think the surgery was safer. makes me not feel like I was suckered into doing something i didnt have to.
I had my surgery at a "Bariatric Center of Excellence". They also didn't require pre-op diet, except the day before to empty your stomach. All we were asked was to try and not gain any additional weight before surgery. I wondered about it before surgery, but now I am just glad. From the comments on here it seems like they mostly just make people miserable or feel bad about themselves for not being able to stick with some crazy 2 week liquid diet. Nothing post-op will be that hard.
