Default Hormone Replacement Therapy and appetite

I was sleeved 03/04/2013. I've been on hrt for about a month due to menopause-related hot flashes and mood swings. I feel better re: those issues, but holy freakin' crap my appetite has returned with a vengeance. Seriously. Has anyone else experienced this (I understand it's typical, but it's far worse than I had expected), did you continue or discontinue hrt, and has anyone had any good experiences with OTC/herbal supplements? Thanks!

Don't mistake the hunger for stomach acid - try eating a chewable antacid like tums or Pepcid. I had the same thing happen about the same time and it was more stomach acid than hunger

Good point, I have stopped taking omeprazole, although I discontinued it quite a while ago...I'll start it up again and see how I feel. This feels much like my old cravings for salt, fat, & sugar. Sugar is the worst. I can not emphasize that enough, lol & grr! I am going to do a reboot - return to shakes & bars during the day and a eat normal dinner, and I'll add the GERD med, too. See if I can kick the cravings and decrease feeling hungry. Thanks for the input. Next step will be discontinuing the hrt and living with the hot flashes...

Yeah, If i miss my omeprazole a couple of days I feel like I can't get satisfied as far as eating. When I take it again I feel back to normal. It doesn't make a lot of sense but I feel more hungry with heartburn than I do when its controlled.

Got back on the omeprazole, quit hrt. My appetite is almost back to "normal". Thanks for the support!

I'm so happy I found this thread. I have been search for an answer to my burst of uncontrollable hunger all of a sudden!! It’s not like anything I have experienced before. I don’t know if it’s from the surgery and a normal progression for me to be this far out? I really don’t think so because it’s an insatiable craving of sugar especially (I’ve never been a sweet eater), carbs and salty food. I can eat and go right back to the kitchen in 30 minutes to eat more. I FULL but I have this sensation, this need to eat! I think I’m pre-menopausal. There are 36 symptoms of pre-menopause; I have 32 of the 36 systems. Ugh… I have come waaaay too far to fall back now. I have been playing with 3-4 pounds bouncing back and forth for the last 2.5 months. That is unlike me to go that long without any weight loss. The scale is not changing much but I see/feel the difference in my waist, stomach and upper thigh area. I tried on some clothes yesterday that where too big for me and not that is not the case. I don’t understand how the scale is not changing much but my body is. Can someone who has gone through this and got it together got back on track tell me what I need to do? Every day I start over with saying no more large amounts of sugar and carbs but by 1:00 PM I’m right back at it. The moment I take my first surgery or high carb bite it triggers me for the rest of the day. Someone please help????
Oh and BTW… Yes I have the hot flashes, lost or scatter brain memory feeling out of sorts and off balance at times. You name it under pre-menopause and I have it!

My step mother reported a very big increase in appetite with HRT. Good luck with whatever you decide.
